McGee had jumped on it right away. Of course he would have been all over it too, if McGee had been the one to say it instead. He had barely gotten the words out and hadn't even had time to realize what he'd said when McGee perked his head up.
"Wait. You have a therapist?"
He didn't have an answer ready.
"You are going to a therapist. Really?"
Tony shot a look at Ziva and saw that she was frozen in place, apparently also shocked by the admission. He thought fast and answered in what he hoped was a perfectly blasé tone. "Yeah. I go to therapy twice a week for my shoulder, physical therapy, McGee."
McGee would have accepted this answer if it had not been for that slight delay. If it had not been for his panicked glance at Ziva or the way he seemed so relieved when he finally had answered the question.
McGee just smiled and thought busted! He turned to Ziva, who was usually eager to join him in tormenting Tony, but she was hard at work on the crime scene and seemed not to have heard the conversation. That seemed weird to Tim, because he knew she had heard.
Well, he thought to himself, Tony and Ziva are close. Maybe she already knew. But if she knew and wasn't picking on him about it, it must be serious. He wondered if Gibbs knew. Probably, he seems to know just about everything about his team. Suddenly, McGee realized that he was probably the only one who didn't know. That hurt him enough so that he felt justified in picking at Tony for the rest of the day.
At the end of the day, Gibbs joined him in the elevator and Tim's blood ran cold when Gibbs stopped the elevator. He knew he had done something wrong, but didn't think that Gibbs could possibly be upset with him for the gentle ribbing he'd been giving Tony.
"Come on boss, I had to pick on him after the way he tormented me when he found out I was going to therapy…"
Gibbs let him say his piece and then said. "I know McGee. But Tony's not in therapy. He takes Ziva. She won't go without him."
He turned away and started the elevator back up and said. "See you tomorrow."
