RWBYKARE
It was a dark and starry night over the kingdom of Vale. Most of the citizens of that fair kingdom were asleep in their dwellings with only a few shops still being open in the residential district. The night air was peaceful with the occasional noise being the gust of wind that blew through the district.
A silent figure, hooded and cloaked, dashed across the rooftops of the residential district, pausing occasionally as if looking or listening for something. The figure reached the edge of a building and looked over it. A shop with the sign, "Henry's Mart" was open with the lights on. The shop owner, a human male, was talking to the customer, a female cat Faunus, over the counter. They seemed to be having a pleasant conversation because they soon shook hands and the cat Faunus departed the store with three medium sized grocery bags filled to the rim with various goods.
As the figure watched, the Faunus turned down an alley and set off at a jogging pace, looking over her shoulder occasionally as though nervous that someone was following her. She turned left and then a shriek cut the night air. The figure ran to where she had turned and looked down to see the Faunus frozen with terror in front of four boys in their late teens.
"You're trespassing in our territory, pussycat," a short haired blond boy said.
"I-I'm so s-sorry," the Faunus stuttered. She tried to turn around but a fifth boy came up behind her and pushed her over, causing her to drop the groceries she was carrying. The boys laughed at her as she scrambled to pick up the spilled contents of her grocery bags. She reached for a package of beef but a brown-haired boy put his foot on it in such a way that she couldn't wrench it free.
"We're bored and wanna have some fun, little kitten."
The gang crowded around the helpless Faunus, malicious intent upon their faces. Above them, the figure who had been watching plunged his hand into his cloak, withdrew a silvery kunai dagger, and hurled it into their midst. The dagger exploded in a cloud of thick steam, disorienting the group of boys.
The figure jumped down from the rooftop, using his outspread cloak to slow his descent. When he reached the ground, he snuck up behind the boys who were flailing around in the fog. The figure grabbed two of them and bashed their heads against each other, breaking their skulls and knocking them out stone cold. He seized the third, slammed him against the brick wall of the alley, pulled out a yellow kunai and pressed it against the boy's skin. A powerful surge of electricity ran from the kunai to the flesh, rendering him unconscious.
As the third boy fell, the figure dashed through the dissipating fog after the last two boys. He drew out a baton and whacked the back of the fourth boy's legs with it, tripping him up, before delivering a solid punch to his head, incapacitating him.
The fifth boy, the blond haired one, seemed to be now aware that his companions were no longer able to assist him. He stood in front of the Faunus who was still on the ground, her hands over her head, covering her feline ears. The blond looked around as the fog slowly cleared away to see his companions lying about the alley unconscious.
"WHERE ARE YOU?!" he shouted.
"Here." whispered a voice behind him.
He turned around with a scream of shock which was then cut short as the figure's gloved fist connected with his jaw, breaking it.
The blond boy fell over and the figure turned to the Faunus who was still on the ground with her hands over her head. The figure sheathed his sword and held out his hand to the Faunus. She raised her head, took his hand, and he helped her up to a standing position.
"You're the vigilante that Vale has been buzzing about," the cat Faunus said, "The Spectre."
The figure didn't speak but nodded. Then he placed his arm across his chest and bowed to the Faunus before letting off another steam kunai, concealing his escape.
Back among the rooftops, the Spectre leaped across roof after roof with great skill and precision till he reached the bridge which connected the residential district with the agricultural and industrial district. The Spectre leaped down from the rooftop and paused by the bridge, looking around carefully. Satisfied that no one was watching, he took out another steam kunai and dropped it onto the ground. The kunai exploded, covering the entrance of the industrial and residential district in dense fog. When the fog cleared away, the Spectre was nowhere to be seen.
The Spectre ran through the orchards and fields of the agricultural district before arriving at a wide, two-story brick house. He quietly opened the door, slipped inside, took off his hood and cloak, and proceeded to take off his boots. Once he had taken off his boots, he removed a stretchy black cap which hid his entire head and face down past his chin.
He was a boy of about seventeen years of age with a neat mane of dark brown hair, and a round face with a square jaw. There were no signs of pimples, freckles, or other blemishes on his face. His face was so clean that he might have been a very handsome young boy except for one oddity: a blindfold completely covered his eyes and the long ends of the blindfold were slung across his back where they fell two feet from where the knot was.
He stiffened, as though listening for something. Suddenly, he whipped out one of his kunai but was slammed against the wall by a green, white, and brown blur.
"WHAT. ARE YOU THINKING?!" Shouted the blur who turned out to be a very tall man with a white button-down shirt, yellow tie, dark green pants, opaque rounded glasses, and wild green hair. "Do you realize you could hurt someone with that thing?!"
"Let me go!" the blind boy yelled.
A light clicked on and two adults in sleepwear came downstairs, the boy's mother and father.
"What's going on?" the father hissed irritated, "Your mother and I are trying to sleep, Alex— Who are you, sir?" he addressed the tall man who had pinned Alex down.
"My name is Doctor Bartholomew Oobleck," replied the man, "And I would like to speak to your son. Privately."
The father hesitated but then nodded, "Just keep it down."
Alex and Doctor Oobleck went into a private room. Once inside, Doctor Oobleck had Alex sit in a chair while he talked, pacing all the while.
"So... You are the Spectre which everyone in Vale has been talking about, am I correct?" Oobleck asked.
Alex said nothing but nodded.
"What is your full name, Alex?"
"My name is Alexander Magnus," Alex replied.
"Why did you do what you did tonight?" Oobleck continued.
"Those boys were going to hurt that poor Faunus girl," Alex responded with anger tainting his voice, "They have no respect for the Faunus so I have no respect for those boys. My father taught me, all of my siblings, at an early age that the Faunus are not to be looked down upon but respected and treated like we would treat any normal human being."
"But did he tell you that it was alright to pulverize humans who treat Faunus with such harsh discrimination?" Oobleck challenged.
"No, but- "
"The boys were transferred to a local hospital with the following injuries," Oobleck cut across Alex, "Three cracked skulls, lightning-induced paralysis, and a broken jaw."
"-They were going to do something nasty to her," Alex protested.
"And furthermore, do your parents know about your nightly activities?" Oobleck asked.
"Only since last week," Alex admitted, "I explained to them that what I do is completely different from the White Fang. The White Fang are terrorists who do more than just injure humans who abuse the Faunus. They have killed humans. I spare humans who abuse Faunus though because I want them to learn from their errors and treat the Faunus with more respect. I want peace between humans and Faunus but both sides make it very difficult. If, however, I can save a Faunus from being abused, I will do it. Even if it's only limited to stopping street gangs."
"I admire your will to help those who cannot help themselves, but you do not have the right to take the law into your own hands without approval of the kingdom, Alexander." Oobleck replied, "If it were up to me, you would be let off with a warning and a slap on the wrist. But there is someone else who wants to speak to you."
Oobleck stopped his pacing as the door opened and a middle-aged man with tousled silver hair and thin brown eyes came into the room.
"Leave us, please Bartholomew." he said.
As soon as Oobleck had left the room, the middle age man addressed Alex.
"Alexander Magnus, do you know who I am?"
"You are Professor Ozpin," Alex responded. "The Headmaster of Beacon Academy."
"Are you truly blind, Alex?"
Alex hesitated but then said. "No. My semblance gives me an uncanny ability to know what's going to happen before I am attacked as well as providing me with a form of second sight even though I am blindfolded. I call it 'Foresight.'"
"And when did you discover your semblance?" Ozpin asked.
"When I was five years old and celebrating my sister, Rosetta's birthday party, we played 'Pin the Tail on the Donkey,'" Alex explained. "When it was my turn to put the blindfold on, instead of seeing nothing but darkness, I saw everything as blurry and distorted but as I got closer to the paper donkey, it seemed as though everything got clearer and I knew what to do. By the time I took the blindfold off after pinning the tail, I discovered that I had stuck the tail on the paper donkey's rump exactly where it would be on a regular donkey.
"After I made this discovery, I thought if I could hone my semblance further, I could wear a blindfold indefinitely and still see as well as though I was not wearing one."
"But why would you pretend to be a blind person when you are not?" asked Ozpin.
"The Faunus can see in the darkness while humans cannot," Alex explained, "But with my semblance, I feel as though I am allowed to share the unique trait which the Faunus have, making the need to protect them that much more urgent. And it helps protect my identity as well."
"What about knowing and acting before you are going to be attacked?" Ozpin continued.
"When I was thirteen years old and in combat school, I was constantly picked on for my family's long history of being Faunus sympathizers. One day during a sparring match, I was fighting against my opponent when I had an overwhelming feeling that someone in the audience was going to shoot me. I grabbed my opponent and held him in front of me just as a shot rang out and an ice bullet hit my opponent, paralyzing his arm.
"The person in the audience got into a lot of trouble but no one picked on me ever again," Alex finished.
"One more thing, Alexander," Ozpin pulled out his scroll, looked for a page, and held it up to Alexander. "How many circles are on screen and what color are they?"
"There are three large yellow circles, two small brown circles, and one medium white circle. Six circles in total." Was the response.
"Have you thought about applying to Beacon Academy?" Ozpin asked.
"Yes."
Ozpin returned to his scroll and pulled up a few pages.
"I see that all of your grades and test scores are exceptionally high, Alexander. And your combat skills are extremely impressive." Ozpin said as he scrolled through his scroll. After a few minutes of silence, Ozpin put the scroll back into his pocket, took out an envelope sealed with the emblem of the Kingdom of Vale and handed it to Alexander.
"I look forward to seeing you at my school."
Alex didn't respond at first as he took the letter from Ozpin but his face lit up with excitement and joy.
"Well?"
"Thank you so much professor! I will give my absolute best in studying at your prestigious academy."
"That will be all for now." said Ozpin. He turned to the door and opened it, but paused. "Also, Alex? No more roaming the streets at night to take the law into your hands."
"Yes sir..."
Ozpin left and Alex slowly got up out of the chair and headed upstairs to his room. As he passed the room of his sister, Rosetta, she opened the door.
"Alex? Is everything alright?"
"Yes, my dear sister. Sleep well. I have a story to tell you in the morning."
Rosetta closed the door and went back to her bed while Alex went to his room. Once inside, he took off the rest of his clothes, put on a pair of pajamas and got into bed. His pet kitten, Lulamoon, opened her yellow eyes as he approached the bed and she purred softly. Alex gently patted her on the head before slipping under the thick, fluffy blankets of his bed.
"What a night, Lulamoon," he yawned, "I need some rest."
Lulamoon padded along the bed before snuggling herself close to her master's head and purred Alexander to sleep. Allowing his weariness to take hold of himself, Alex fell into dreams of honor and nobility. Of peace and unity between humans and Faunus.
All the while he slept, Lulamoon purred contentedly.
