What would happen if Bella was too late to save Edward?

A short story of the Romeo and Juliet ending for New Moon:

"Edward!" I cried, running faster than I had ever before. I tripped over my foot, but caught myself mid fall. I screamed his name again and again. I tried to increase my speed by taking longer lunges. It worked a little. But only a little.

"Edward! Please! Edward!" People turned their heads to stare at me, but I hardly noticed. "Edward!" And that time my screaming helped. I saw him, godlike and beautiful as ever. His shirt was off, and from what I could see, it was laying in a ball next to him. And the last few months didn't matter. He was there, and I was going to save him. I didn't care if he didn't want me, I'd find a way to stay with him.

He couldn't see me, and I didn't think my screaming could help. I saw so far from him as he took one huge breath, and closed his eyes, as if stepping into a dream, and walked out into the sun.

"EDWARD! NO!" I was crying, the tears flowing freely. I ran, hoping to not to draw too much attention.

My commotion only made it worse. Black shapes flew past me. Edward's smile grew, and I was close enough now that he could see me. "EDWARD!" I sobbed broken heartedly. The black capes were surrounding him, and everyone was staring. I heard their whispers, and from the corner of my eye, I saw people pointing. The black cloaked figures were pulling Edward back. I tried, one last time. "EDWARD!" I sobbed, my voice breaking with my heart.

I saw his beautiful face turn now. His eyes wide with terror. He saw me, and he looked marvelously happy, just like he had after our first kiss… And his face crumpled within the same instant. He was a burning man, tortured. As if he'd been suffering just as much as I had been. I was a few feet from him now, and I took the last two steps as I watched the Volturi people pull at him. From Edward's lips, I saw the four words I longed for the most.

I love you, Bella.

I sobbed, as the Volturi dragged deeper into the ally, and tore my beloved to shreds. And I wasn't going to be able to survive this time. Not because I'd die of sadness, because I'd die the same way, and the same time as him.

"No! No NO! NO!" I screamed and hit the stone cloaked men with my fists. I was hitting their hard bodies to hard that I felt my hand brake, but I continued to hit and kick with whatever I had left in me. The men finally turned, their blood red eyes piercing into my skull. They laughed, and behind them, I could see Edward's face, but it was rolling…

"Kill me." I fell to me knees, and tried to beg with a whisper. "This must be Bella." One of them said. "What should we do?" another asked. I felt the tears rolling down my face, and I fell to the ground. Edward, Edward, Edward. No. Not gone. Please. No Edward. No. Edward. "You heard her!" the first said. "Let's eat." I felt them closing in as my heart leaped, a few seconds longer and I would be with Edward.

"I love you, Edward." And one last tear fell from my cheek.

I couldn't feel them kill me, but I could feel myself dissolving. I felt a freedom as I left my body, and floated up. I felt myself becoming more whole, and once again, I could feel the stone, cold arms wrap around me.

Bella. The beautiful velvet voice came from beside me, and I felt the cool breath and his sweat sent blown across my face. His arms tightened, and I knew where I was.

Edward.

I was in my heaven with Edward.
