Finally, a proper Fire Emblem prose fanfic. It's been more than 3 months...
This one's another pairing. HectorFlorina now. Snowylavendermist advised me to write one, so I did. It's not much though, quite short. Enjoy it.
Rest in the Heat
Like a barrage of arrows, the piercing heat of the desert sun rained down on the army, as they fought their way through the whirling sands. They were here on a mission to find the Living Legend, and had found themselves trapped in the web of battle, once again.
Shading his eyes from the blazing flames of the sun above, Hector searched, face stung by the sand, for the monk whom Absol had told him to battle. Blast this terrible heat, he cursed silently, raising his Wolf Beil, ready to take on any blow, as he continued the fruitless search.
Instead, the first thing to catch his eye was the blurred white shape darting about far before him, over the yellow sands. The bright wings were simply blurs as the great winged horse rose and fell through the air, the skilled rider delivering attacks at the monk below.
That must be the one, Hector thought. Facing the sand that pierced like a thousand needles, he raced forth, over the shifting ground, towards the battle.
Ahead of him, Florina was fighting furiously, swerving and dodging the blasts of light that flew at the slim figure between the pegasus' two wings. Her beaded forehead was shiny with sweat, her hair tossed about wildly by her vigorous movements and dodges. She was panting with effort as she launched forth with another attack, striking the ground beside the monk, throwing sand up in her face. Even her pegasus' moves had lost their strength in the dreary heat.
Hector could not continue to watch a beautiful young woman like her put herself through such suffering in the cruel sun. Quickly racing forward, he swung the steel blade of his axe down on the vulnerable monk's head, finishing him in a single hit.
Sweating profusely, wiping his brow, he looked up. Florina gave a hard gasp, and her pegasus immediately collapsed to the sands, stricken by the heat, almost all its life gone. Its wings folded over itself, and Florina dragged herself wearily off the creatures back.
"Florina!" Hector exclaimed, alarmed, looking down upon the pale, sweaty face of the Pegasus Knight, helping her stand. Her mouth was open, lips dry. "That's enough fighting for now."
"No…" She panted in reply. "I have a duty. I am a knight now, I can't rest—" She collapsed straight into his arms, exhausted. Hector watched her struggling to get up again, holding her gently for fear of injuring her. She's got a strong spirit, he thought with honour for her.
"No, you've done quite enough," he replied comfortingly.
At last, Florina gave up, leaning back on his armoured chest. "I…can't go on," she sighed, eyes closing. "It's…too hot." Hector could see her tiredness. Deep in his heart, he loved her. And now, he wanted to keep her safe, just for now, for the rest of this battle.
"Rest now, Florina," Hector said, holding her close, away from the burning sunlight. "You'll be fine. I'll get you to the tent."
Florina nodded weakly, a smile appearing on her lips.
You'll be fine, as long as I'm around.
I couldn't find a better title for this fanfic, so I apologise if you think it's inappropriate. It was inspired by this line from a prayer: "Pleasant coolness in the heat".
I apologise if it's not up to standard. I did it in about half an hour, during computer studies (which is quite illegal).
