The tall man reached out, his hand shaking. "Give me the box, Sadie."
She squinted up at him. "I keep them safe."
"Ma'am, I…" He rubbed his face. She smelled blood and ash. "I need the box."
"No! This is all I have left of my son. My family." Thin fingers clutched the box tighter.
He winced. "My family—my brother. Your son has him trapped." Impatiently, "You agreed to end this." He held out his hand, gesturing. "Now."
Salt and smoke and she was left, gently brushing hard enamel crumbs of tiny teeth into her palm. A whispered, "Goodbye."
