The surprise

He leaned against the wall as tears dripped down his face. A glance at the clock on the wall caused him to wipe his tears away with shaky hands and stand.
'Why must it always be like this' he thought to himself 'I'm the bloody United Kingdom, a former empire, I can do this' with that thought, Arthur fixed his tie and began walking towards the door.
He walked through the door and headed down the stairs of his small cottage before smiling sadly to himself as he saw the emptiness of the room. 'The same as always' Arthur sighed and laughed when a familiar voice reached his ears.
"Happy Birthday Arthur" a small voice sounded from his right.
"Thank you mint bunny" Arthur said with a small smile. He began making his way to the kitchen for a cup of tea when the slamming of a door stopped him mid-step. Turning he was shocked to see Matthew and Alfred standing there with big smiles on their faces.
"What are you two doing here, I thought you were too busy" Arthur looked at them with a confused and a surprised expression.
"Dude we wouldn't missed your birthday!" Alfred said, his sea blue eyes twinkling with glee. Matthew came out from behind Alfred with a soft smile on his face "We couldn't leave you alone on your birthday" he held out a cake "We made you a cake to have with some tea."
Tears began falling down Arthur's face "Thank you" he pulled them into a hug while smiling.
