THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS City of Ashes BY: Cassandra Clare

The story starts out in chapter 1 Valentine's Arrow PAGE: 25

Clary shut the bedroom door on the blaring TV and went to look for Simon. She found him in the kitchen, bent over the sink with water running. His hands were braced on the draining board.

"Simon?" The kitchen was a bright, cheerful yellow, the walls decorated with framed chalk and pencil sketches Simon and Rebecca had done in grade school. Rebecca had some drawing talent, you could tell, but Simon's sketches of people all looked like parking meters with tufts of hair.

He didn't look up now, though she could tell by the tightening of his shoulder muscles that he'd heard her. She went over to the sink, laying a hand lightly on his back. He slowly turned to look at her, his eyes hidden behind the hair that was plastered to his face. He was sweating buckets when finally he looked up to meet my eyes.

I almost cried out in shock; his eyes were glowing red. "Clary, what's wrong?" Simon asked his voice full of pain. "Your eyes are red! I mean they're bright ruby red," Clary exclaimed. When she calmed down she asked, "Simon, are you okay?" Simon nodded yes then croaked out, "Yeah, i'm fine."

Clary looked at him with a worried expression. "Why are you looking at me like that?" "You don't look fine you're sweating buckets, you sound horrible, and your eyes are glowing red for Christ sake!" Clary yelled. Clary turned on the heel of her foot towards the doorway and practically ran back to the bedroom, with Simon following right at her heels.

Clary grabbed her phone that was lying on the bed and started punching numbers on the screen. "What are you doing?" Simon asked worriedly. "Calling Luke. Maybe he knows something about this," Clary said. "No, you're not," Simon said in his no-nonsense tone "can't you tell what's happening? I'm turning into a vampire, Clary and there's nothing you can do to stop it."

Clary looked at him and saw that he wasn't kidding, not one bit. Finally she said, "We don't know that for sure, Simon. For all we know you could just have these symptoms because you had a little taste of vampire blood. And we'll never know until we ask Luke." Clary then hit the dial button on her phone.

It only rung two times then Clary was hearing Luke talking to her on the phone. "Clary, can you hear me? Is everything alright?" Luke asked in a worried tone. "Uh, yeah wait I mean no, everything is definitely not alright." Luke sounding even worried now said, "What's wrong do I need to come over?"

"Yeah, I think you should. No one is hurt or anything, but we kind of have a situation." Luke didn't say anything for a minute. I was about to say something when his voice came back on the phone making me jump. "I'm headed over there right now," Luke said then hung up.

Just five minutes later Luke came barreling through the door. Clary caught him up on what happened. He looked at Simon and his red eyes and pulled out his phone. He left the room talking talking to who ever was on the other line. Minutes passed by with Simon and Clary sitting quietly, not speaking to one another.

Luke came back, now off the phone. "I was just talking to Raphiel, he wants Simon to come to the Dumort with us." Clary turned to Simon and said "Is this what you want?" "Yes Cary, I would like to know why I'm turning into a freaking vampire," Simon said agitated. Luke, walking towards the door called out, "Okay, come on let's go."
