School Shopping
"Alright Houston, we have everything you need for school except a backpack, let's go pick one out." Jackie told him.
Jackie was taking Houston school shopping, Jasmine would get her turn the next day but Nick and Jackie agreed that Houston should get to go first because it was going to be his very first day of school and he was super excited.
Houston hadn't really cared about picking out new outfits to wear to school but once they went over to the back to school section of the store his little eyes just got wide from excitement.
Jackie let him pick what color scissors and pencil box to get as well as other things that were on the school's kindergarten list and Houston loved every second of it.
When Jackie and Houston walked over to where the backpacks were she quickly scanned the long line of them. She knew immediately which one he would pick.
Houston though excitedly dug through every one of them until he got to the one Jackie knew he'd select.
"Dis one." He said happily without a second's hesitation as he held up a red backpack with a fire truck on it.
Jackie smiled at him.
"That one is really cool buddy." She told him as she grabbed it off the hook and threw it into their cart.
"Me carry it." He told her.
"Alright." She said with a chuckle as she took it out of the cart and handed it to him.
When they got to the checkout line he proudly handed the backpack to the cashier.
After they had been checked out they headed back to the car.
"Mama me go to school today?" He asked her excitedly.
"Well not today sweetheart, school doesn't start until next week." She replied.
"Not today?" He asked sounding sad.
"Not today, sorry bud." She said.
He had everything he needed for school, he just didn't understand why Jackie wouldn't let him go to school that very day.
His excitement from buying his school supplies vanished and now he appeared like he was going to cry.
"How about you and mommy go grab a milkshake before we go home?" She offered, trying to cheer him up, as well as continue the tradition she had started with Jasmine the summer before. After buying all of her school supplies Jackie had taken her for a milkshake and the little girl had loved it and so now Jackie wanted to make it a tradition for all of the kids when they went and got school supplies.
"Ok." The little boy replied, sounding slightly cheered up but not totally.
Although Houston drank his milkshake he still was sad when he got home.
"Hi little buddy, did you have fun buying all of your school supplies?" Nick asked once they had gotten home as he sat on the couch feeding the baby a bottle.
"Yeah." The little boy replied glumly before leaving the room.
Nick was shocked, they little boy had been so excited when he left the house earlier that afternoon.
"What happened?" Nick mouthed to Jackie.
She sat down on the couch next to him.
"He's sad because he wanted to go to school today, he didn't understand when I told him that he couldn't go today because school doesn't start until next week." Jackie explained to him with a sigh.
She felt terrible, she hated ruining Houston's fun day.
"Oh, well, look at it this way, he doesn't have long to wait, and it's great that he is so excited." Nick told Jackie.
"That's true." Jackie responded with a smile.
Nick was right, school was right around the corner and Jackie was extremely happy that Houston was so excited about it.
The End!
