This fic was written for "lovedeeper," a Live Journal SDK fan community, for its "Fubuki's Birthday" Fic Challenge. I believe Zuki-nee-san (nekozuki1776) has submitted a fic under the same challenge - I recommend reading it!
Disclaimer:The Narrator is a fangirl, thus this story is fanfiction; ergo, she does not own Samurai Deeper Kyo, and writes because this depressing fact weighs on her everyday... (begins sobbing)
Sleepy-time Can Be Hazardous…
Fubuki slowly opened his eyes, grunting irritably and flinching at the annoyingly bright light that flooded his retinas.
He hated those floaty dark spots that took forever to fade from his vision.
Shielding his eye with his hand, Fubuki opened his eyes more carefully, reorienting himself to his surroundings. He had fallen asleep in one of his favorite "meditation" spots, a grassy knoll that, while sheltered from prying eyes by ancient sakura trees, commanded an impressive view of the whole of Mibu territory. Spreading out before him was a magnificent panoramic sunset, blood-red and gold, gilding the rooftops and carefully constructed gardens of the Mibu Castle Town.
It always gave him a secret surge of smug pride to look down over all that was Mibu, knowing that, very soon, everything that stood grey and indistinct on the edges of the darkening horizon would also fall under the Mibu's sway.
Almost always, at least. Right now the blazing sun was giving him a headache. How could he have possibly fallen asleep, anyway? Just because he happened to be another year older today was not supposed to mean anything to a near-immortal like him.
And what was that insufferable racket! Fubuki frowned as he worked the kinks out of his back (from sleeping against a tree trunk, not because he was getting older!). Ah, yes, the swallows that nested in some of the surrounding trees - they always got noisier just as the sun set, tweeting and warbling and bickering their little lungs out.
They seemed much louder today, and Fubuki idly wondered if his cat had gotten into one of their nests. That would be a tragedy, now wouldn't it?
If Fubuki smirked slightly, no one was around to take note of it.
"Hishigi…" Fubuki acknowledged, his smirk dissolving instantly as he recognized the other Taishourou's ki.
"Konbonwa, Fubuki," Hishigi greeted quietly, but Fubuki barely heard him over a sudden outburst of agitated bird chatter. Couldn't that cat move any faster and get rid of the annoying pests?
Hishigi slowly blinked his singular eye, his face not registering a whit of emotion (per usual). "Fubuki, the swallows have made a nest in your hair again."
"Dammit!"
The Narrator would like to add in closing that her other fics have not been abandoned (yet), and she promises she'll keep working on them!
