Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter.
On one sunny day in October, Neville found Luna by the lake with her sketchbook out trying to sketch the area when a piece of parchment fell out of her sketch pad. When he looked at it, it appeared to be a picture of a family that didn't look like her other sketches and was signed Al.
"Is this yours, this doesn't seem to be one of yours?" Neville asked.
"Yes it is, but I didn't draw it my mum had it as a gift from one of the patients in the hospital when she volunteered there doing art projects with the patients. She even worked with some of the patients in the restricted ward, and even told me a tragic love story about two of the patients with Al being one of them. Though Al was the woman in the story and isn't that an unusual name for a woman?" Luna remarked with the usual dreamy look in her eyes.
"What do you remember your mum telling you about them?" Neville asked starting to sound interested while looking at the drawing that he now held in his hand.
"Only that her and her husband were taken forcibly from their house and young child to be tortured for information on You Know Who's whereabouts after he was defeated the first time and that they were famous Aurors. That the little boy's grandmother found her grandson almost dead and abandoned by his parents, that started the search for him since no parent would leave their child in a state like that. They were found days later in horrid conditions and out of their minds, my mum could see how much Al loved her husband by how she wanted to include him in some of their activities, even if he could do very much. He couldn't even feed himself. My dad started to write an article about the horrible way that those war heroes were being treated at St. Mungo's, unfortunately my mum died in an accident before the story could go to press. My mum told me that she could do more than what the Healers thought that she could, but they just wanted to keep them drugged on potions all day and not work with them at all," Luna told him while he couldn't believe that she would even know that story since he didn't hear the whole story until he was eight and not from his Gran but from his Great Uncle Algie.
"How old were you when your mum died?"
"I was nine," Luna answered with Neville realizing that he was ten years old when Luna lost his mum and he was cheated out of spending time with his own mum and he could think of one reason why.
"Did any of your parents ever tell you Al's real name or do you just think that her name is Al?" Neville asked her sounding interested in what her answer would be to that question.
"No, I've only known her as Al but I keep her drawing because she is an inspiration to me since she drew this when nobody other than my mum thought that she couldn't do something like this. Kind of like us, I'm sure that the Death Eaters probably don't think that we would provide a resistance to the Carrows and Snape," Luna told him while Neville was amazed that she would even think of his own mother as inspiring and he thought for a few minutes before telling her Al's first name.
"Her name is Alice."
Luna looked shocked at first that he would even know Al's first name and then thought about her son and wondering how old he was.
"Here you can have this I think that you would appreciate this more than me," Luna told him talking about the drawing that he held in his hand.
Neville took it looking puzzled, wondering if she had figured out his secret, "Thanks."
"It's nothing, I would love having something that my mum made, that's why I wear this necklace because it was one of the last craft projects that I did with her before she died," Luna answered pointing out her butterbeer necklace.
