The Dream
by Bugs & Beauty
AN: This is my first WAT fanfic. J/S centered from Jack's POV. No real spoilers.
He dreamt this night as he had dreamt of them every night for the past month. In his dream he stood on the corner of the street waiting for the light to turn green. He could see the office building where he and many other agents worked tirelessly. People walked in and out of it without seeing him. An old lady clutched a paper bag in her arms. She pushed past him. Whatever words that were on his lips died as he looked at her. Her eyes were empty. A couple stopped near him. He could see the same blankness in their eyes. He turned in a three hundred sixty degree circle. All around him were empty people.
A flash of blonde hair bundled in a black coat skipped across the street. It was on the tip of his tongue to call out to her. He did not. He had no more claim on her time than on Vivienne's time. He could not. Sam stopped on the street corner and faced him. She held a cup of coffee from Starbuck's in her hand. He did not know why he noticed that about her every time. He could not recall when she had ever had Starbuck's coffee.
Another flash. His wife and two little girls. They stood on the opposite corner waiting for him. Dressed in their school uniforms with a backpack strapped firmly on them. This is where he belonged...or had.
He looked between them. Sam with her hopeful smile and eyes that loved him. His family who waited for him to patiently return. A woman who understood him in every way in one direction. The two little girls who needed him in another direction.
He hated the dream.
