Author's note: Just something sad…

Goodbye Love

Bella laid on the bed, frail looking as she slept, her breathing labored with every breath. Edward laid by her side, holding her as she slowly passed away from this world. He made good on his promise and never changed her and stayed with her through her whole life. Now he wasn't sure if he was ready to let her go. He closed his eyes as his wife slept.

He could remember that day during lunch when he first saw her. The cold hard stares he gave her. His thoughts in biology as he tried to ignore her scent, the way he thought about killing her. He resisted. He resisted for 75 years. He could still picture her young, innocent face in his mind. Her clear brown eyes.

"Edward," She murmured, her winkled face twitching. He looked at her, saw her eyes open, the focus gone. He knew the time was near. "Promise me…you'll go on." She said, always worried, concerned about how he would be after she's gone. He kissed her forehead. "Promise…" her eyes drift shut, he knew that was the last time they would ever open again. He could hear her heartbeat getting weaker. He was tempted to call in Carlisle.

"I promise, Bella." He told her, "I promise."

His mind went to when James lured her away from Alice and Jasper, and almost killed her. He growled at that. He was scared to lose her, scared that he wouldn't be able to stop when he sucked the venom out. Angry that he couldn't have been the one to kill him. He was so relieved when Bella was going to be alright.

Her heart slowed even more.

He thought back on her 18th birthday and the hell he left her in after the paper cut incident. How he went to the Volturi to have them kill him. How he thought he was dead when Bella flung herself on him, knocking him back in the shadows. How grateful he was when she saved his life.

It wont be long now.

They had tried for a baby after marriage. But Bella lost all the pregnancies in the early stages, and they soon gave up. Bella had her tubes tied, unable to take any more heartbreak. They adopted a baby boy, who was a man now with children and a grandchild of his own. They lived in England. They rarely kept in contact. Carlisle contacted him when his mother became ill and dying. He talked to Bella before getting worse, sending his love, wishing he could be there. Edward knew that he wouldn't be able to come, all of his son's instincts told him to stay away, though he loved his family dearly. Edward didn't want him around, they kept the boy a secret from the Volturi, he wouldn't endanger his child like that.

Almost time…

Edward remembered chasing Bella around the house, hearing her laugh as he ran at human pace. He would miss her laughter, her voice, her soft, warm skin.

…to say goodbye…

He wondered if he would be able to carry on. His family would help him. His mother and father, brothers and sisters were outside the door waiting, knowing that he wanted to be alone with his wife. He prayed that his biological parents, Elizabeth and Edward Masen would care for Bella up in Heaven.

Her heart stopped beating.

Edward gasped softly, the musical sound gone. The breathing stopped. He buried his face in her gray hair and dry sobbed, wishing that he would cry tears. He wasn't ready to let go, to go on. But he had to. He promised he would. He would always remember Bella. He would never forget.

"I love you, Bella." He murmured and got up. He went out to his waiting family and told them, though they already knew. Their Bella, the light in Edward's life, was gone.
