"Still, still…the skies are burning. The angels cried when the morning star fell."
Sam closes his eyes and tilts his head, his movements slow and deliberate, swaying slightly to music (voicesscreamingpleading) only he can hear, fingers moving as though touching the different notes.
"…barefoot children sing of death and play games with corpses. The sky fell again today. The sun didn't notice, but luna did." Sam's hand goes to his face; fingers digging in harshly. A hand on his own gently coaxes him to let go.
Sam's head flings back and he shrieks with joy like only children should.
"Saw it all through chaos' eyes. The innocent dance with the damned round and round and round. So close, too close, but never enough." Hazel eyes meet green, "I wanna play too, but their skin sloughs away before I can reach them".
Dean watches Sam's expression change from childish joy to heartbreak. Dean brushes bangs from a pale forehead as Sam begins to cry and murmur, all miserable and desperate and broken. A keening wail as Sam slumps exhaustedly over his crossed legs, head on his brother's jean-clad thigh.
"My knight, my lost, my only…"
Dean can only brush back his hair hope the tears in his eyes don't fall.
"brightest light casts the darkest shadow…"
And Sam was the brightest of all.
Rant of Supernatural theory (non story related, though it may one day become a coherent plot bunny ^_^):
What if Sam was the embodiment of the force of Chaos. Chaos being neither good or evil, but only limitless potential and possibility. Maybe that's how Dean's supposed to save the world, not from his own power, but Sams because, let's face it, if Sam were the attack dog, the weapon, Dean is the one holding the leash. Dean controls Sam and his powers. That's why the demons accepted Dean's deal for Sam, they thought they could control him, but instead of taking his anger out on the world, he self-destructed with Dean in hell.
So, follow me here, this could offer an explanation of the Trickster. Though he only ended up traumatizing Sam with the endless days and Dean's death, he was genuinely trying to help Sam, show what would happen to him after Dean died. Chaos is neither good or evil and neither is the Trickster (Loki), so in another life, another existence, Loki and chaos may have been friends.
Don't know, just a bunny hopping around my head.
