And here is my second attempt at a oneshot. I hope you enjoy it!
Hanabi left her lunch box in the kitchen on a table by the dishwasher. Branch members scurried around preparing the main family's supper. Pots clanged as they were used or put away. Two people stood furiously chopping vegetables at a central table while another was flambéing, the flames rising high in the air before shrinking back into the pan. As an older woman hurried past Hanabi caught her attention.
"Tomorrow I want dango in my lunch," the younger Hyuuga commanded.
The older woman looked startled for a moment, then nodded.
"I will tell Hinata-sama," she said with a bow before heading off. Hanabi stood in the doorway a moment her surprise hidden behind the Hyuuga icy demeanor.
Sister makes my lunch?
The next day when Hanabi grabbed her lunch box she noticed it was heavier than usual. Quickly opening it she saw the dango as well as her normal lunch, but there was enough for at least ten people. Hanabi blushed slightly and tried to retied the cloth wrapped around the box. It was then that Hinata walked into the kitchen with a watering can, noticing her sister she smiled and walked over.
" Is your lunch alright?" she asked quietly as she filled up the watering can in the sink.
"Why did you make me so much food?" asked Hanabi trying to sound angry but the light blush indicated otherwise. Hinata looked at her in surprise then at the bento Hanabi had been trying to tie. Gently the elder sibling took it and neatly did up the cloth.
"Iruka-sensei told me your class was going to have a potluck picnic today so I thought you'd like to bring something more than just dango," she said handing the box back to her sister.
The younger Hyuuga turned her head away but took the box by the cloth. No one in her class was expecting her to bring anything. Partly because she saw herself as above them but also she wasn't quite sure how to socialize with the other children her age. Not that she'd ever admit her insecurities. Still, it would be a shame to waste all that food.
Hanabi didn't realize it but Hinata was subtly forcing her to talk to her classmates. After all, she didn't want her younger sister to end up as socially awkward as herself.
"Hn," was Hanabi's response as the academy student headed out the door. The teenager's eyes softened and a small smile curved her mouth, she would translate that as 'thank you'.
"Wow, Hanabi this is really good!" said one of the boys as he popped a piece of dango in his mouth. Several of the young Hyuuga's classmates were crowded around her.
"Pft, she probably had servants make it for her," one of the girls said as she looked at her own near full plate of mushy, unidentifiable food. Hanabi looked at them and they saw the pride in her eyes that, though it was often there, seemed somehow different; softer.
"…My sister made it."
"Man, your sister's a good cook!" said another. Hanabi then did something she hadn't done in quite a while despite her young years.
She smiled.
….
This was happiness.
I would like to thank my sister Suki dah Turdle for beta-ing this for me. I love her and you should too!!
