Yumichika had been exceptionally happy this morning when Shuuhei had finally dragged himself out of bed. It had caught the vice captain off guard and as the other man whisked around the kitchen, humming a tuneless song, Shuuhei racked his brain for some important occasion for today that he must have forgotten. When he came up with nothing and Yumichika didn't drop any not-so-subtle hints over breakfast he figured that Yumichika just must be in a good mood and nothing more. That was until at the door, when they were parting ways for work, with a quick kiss and grope Yumi winked at him and purred, "I can't for tonight, don't be late."

Shuuhei felt his heart drop down to his gut, but still tried hard his best to give his lover his usual smile before heading off. He spent the entire morning distracted trying to figure out what was special about the day he forgot about. And when lunch time came around he went into to town to try to get something that could hopefully salvage things when it became apparent that he didn't remember whatever today was supposed to be.

Of course not knowing the occasion made it tricky to decide what gift would be need but past memories reminded Shuuhei that Yumichika was always happy with something expensive and shiny so he went with that, even though it meant draining his savings enough to keep him from going drinking with his buddies for the rest of the month. But considering the punishment he had received the last time he forgot an anniversary (two straight weeks of sleeping on the couch), it was a small price to pay.

So feeling a bit relieved Shuuhei returned home to find the pretty shinigami waiting for him at the door, with the 'come hither' look that Shuuhei had come to learn as a good sign for a memorable night. The vice captain sent up a silent prayer so that he won't mess things up and enjoy what was to come for him. "You been waiting long for me?" he asked as he reached the door, with a grin on his face.

"Long enough," the slender man answered, as he pulled Shuuhei in to the house and began to disrobe him as quickly as possible. In the process of taking the bigger man's clothes off, Yumichika finds the gift wrapped box that Shuuhei had on him. "Hmm, what's this?"

The nervousness of being caught without remembering what special occasion today was supposed to be, came back to the vice captain immediately. "Something I got for ya, for today, ya know," he answered hoping that Yumichika wouldn't suspect anything.

"Really? Can I open it?" Yumichika asked even though by then the smaller man had already begun to unwrap the gift. Shuuhei was glad and relieved to hear his lover squee over the jeweled gold bracelet, and hoped it was more than adequate for whatever today was supposed to be.

"This is truly wonderful, sweetie," Yumichika cooed as he admired the bracelet, then innocently asked, "What did you get it for? Is there a special occasion today?"

Shuuhei felt like an idiot for overreacting and spending the small fortune he did on the gift. But as the pretty man looked at him with those expectant eyes, he really couldn't be angry at himself at the moment. So instead he just shrugged and told his lover, "No reason."
