In the Night.
I can hear him. He's alone again... but I still hear it. The groans he makes... I know he's doing it by himself. It's always like this. He sounds like he's in pain. I just want to be with him... but he's too afraid of other people to let even someone like me touch him. He's like that. I understand.
His breath is getting faster now... faster and faster... he's breathing deeper and deeper... He's letting out little cries and moans. I can hear the creaking from the bed... it makes my body get tense... and then I hear the shuddering gasp through gritted teeth and the long sigh.
It's over... I hear him panting. He's exhausted.
I open the door only a crack.
The rise and fall of his heaving chest... one hand on his forehead... his mouth is open, gasping for breath... Beads of sweat are forming on his face... they're reflecting the light of the moon. I quietly close the door. Tomorrow will be just like any other day... and I won't speak of what I've seen...
I never do.
Even though I've heard it happen countless times now...
Even when it wakes me up...
Even if I'm always the one behind the door...
I'm at his side by day... but never in the night.
