Dark thoughts
Palpatine is always plotting and planning. These are some occasions Palpatine is forced to think about Obi-Wan, be it as possible apprentice or increasing nuisance.
Episode I, Funeral
The flames rise higher at the body that his apprentice had slaughtered. He had been good enough to kill a Jedi master, but somehow, Maul lost against this Jedi's padawan, who was not even a real knight. That was inconvenient. Palpatine had some tasks he needed to delegate, and with his new position as chancellor, he was even more in need of a blunt instrument that was completely his, but not suspected to be. He had to keep up the façade, which would be no problem, considering the fact that he was currently surrounded by nearly half of the Jedi council. Nobody suspected anything behind the nice senator from Naboo, who by chance became the chancellor.
His thoughts drifted back to Maul's replacement. Being a Sith, it would have a nice twist to take Kenobi as his apprentice. The fight between them would then have been an initiation rite, the stronger one the only one left to be the apprentice. It was not unusual that an aspiring Sith was killed by another one who then took his post. Kenobi was in the right age, and he was strong in the Force, Palpatine felt it when they met before, right after his mentor had been killed. He had erected shields around him that were impressive for his age. So much that Palpatine had been tempted to try to penetrate them, but that would have been careless and could have threatened his position.
He opened himself a tiny bit for the Force, to realize a small trickling of grief from his object's shields. Maybe he thought himself unwatched - or more likely, considering that half of the council was here and he couldn't be unwatched - his self-control was starting to crumble and he couldn't contain or release all of his feelings. Interesting, so Maul triggered some emotions with his last act, maybe a crack that could be opened further with the right means… humans – it would be especially hard for them to shut their feelings away like a nice and well-behaved Jedi does.
And with that thought, his eyes drifted to the other interesting person present. He radiated in the Force, even though he was only a small boy. Or more likely, he radiated because he didn't know how to use all the energy that he possessed.
Palpatine couldn't be the only one around noticing this, he was sure that the boy's prolonged presence meant that he would be taken into the order.
Him sticking to Kenobi could mean that he was already made apprentice to him.
He had to get more information about that, and fast. The boy had an aura of potential, and although it would be a lot of work to turn him to the dark side, it would be easy to influence him slowly from the beginning.
Kenobi, on the other hand was already indoctrinated by his light side, and it would need many of his resources to break him. And he wasn't completely sure Kenobi would break and abandon his light side before he was too much a wreck to be restored.
He was distracted by the pathetic gungan next to him, who produced some undignified wails. It was nearly an insult that they were from the same planet, he thought with a shiver.
Palpatine turned his head back to the flames that consumed the Jedi's body. It was only a taste of what was to come for the Jedi, and they were already shocked deeply by this little incident.
He subdued his desire for laughter with ease and maintained his iron façade.
