"Ake? Is that you?" Tyler called from the living room, working on his laptop.
Ake said a yes just loud enough that Tyler would hear it before phasing through the walls and ceiling until he reached his room. He unfurled his wings, touching the bruises on his body and whimpering when they ached.
As he put medicine on his wounds, he tried to take deep breaths to keep calm, but his lungs were feeling exhausted, and he ended up coughing.
Memories surfaced of the bullies hitting him while he tried to make his way back home from the store. They punched him and kicked and even pinched him, calling him emo, and saying he hurt himself on purpose when someone stopped to ask.
Ake sank to the floor by the side of his bed, sobs shaking his thin body. He curled his wings around himself tightly.
Taylor was walking past Ake's room when she heard the sobbing, and she opened the door, concerned.
She gasped when she saw the young necrofriggian crying. Rushing to him, she touched his shoulder. "Ake! What's wrong?"
He only shook his head.
Taylor grabbed his fluffy white blanket and wrapped him up in it, holding him close and rocking him back and forth. "Shh, shh, it's okay. You're alright. No one's going to hurt you."
When he calmed down, he started to talk. "Some of the kids from school jumped me, and they hit me."
Taylor got angry, but kept it controlled. "Have you treated the wounds yet?"
"I-I was trying to…"
"You want me to help?"
"Yes, please."
Taylor had Ake sit on his bed while she got some bandages and salve, and she played some soft music from her phone while she put the sticky stuff onto his bruises and cuts and bandaged them carefully.
"Taylor?"
"Yes?"
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"I got snot and tears all over your shirt."
She waved it off. "Don't worry about it. And don't apologize for crying either, sometimes you just have to cry. It's good for the soul." Taylor helped him lay down and covered him up with his blankets.
Just before he fell asleep, Ake smiled up at her and said, "For someone so fiery, you can be gentle with family."
She watched as he closed his eyes, and she kissed his forehead, closing the door and wishing him sweet dreams.
