Fire.

Flames filled his vision, scorched his body.

Demons whispered to him, bathed in crimson light, and disappeared.

Faces twisted in anger and disgust stared down at him, cursing his name. They ignored his denials, and blows rained down on him.

He tried to run from the inferno, and the accusations. He tripped, fell, and... awakened.

Tomaz gasped for air. The dream had come again. He forced himself to sit up and look at his surroundings.

Even in darkness, he could see everything clearly. They camped in the middle of a huge forest clearing, with a river flowing by one edge. Their fire had gone out, leaving glowing embers in gray ash. His companion, a former soldier from nearby Coneria, slept soundly in his bedroll. His armor lay in a heap near the foot of the bed, topped with a large shield and even larger sword. Tomaz envied him for being able to take of his armor. He couldn' t take off any of his robes or other clothing. Not without his secret coming out, anyways. There were some things he couldn't reveal even to his best friend.

Sweat was beaded on his forehead, and his throat felt dry. Quietly, he stood and walked to the other edge of the clearing, to the river. He lowered the hood of his cloak and slowly unclasped the back of the black cloth mask he always wore, hiding his face and his right eye, his past's damning evidence. He pulled it up enough to reveal his mouth, then knelt and dipped his gauntlet-covered hands under the water. He brought the water to his mouth, and the cool liquid soothed his burning throat.

Behind him, he could hear the soldier rustling in his bedroll. Quickly, he redid the mask's clasp and pulled down the hood. A deep drowsy voice called to him. "Tomaz, where are you? Are you okay? I can't see you in this annoying darkness."

"I'm fine," he answered. "Just go back to sleep, Doman." More rustling, then silence. Soon, loud snoring told that his friend had taken his advice.

He stayed sitting by the river, thinking and waiting for the sun to rise.

A.N. The first chapter didn't seem too bad. Hopefully, the others will be at least this good. Please review.
