"Tris!" Christina called, jogging into the transfer dorm. "There's a guy here to see you, he's up by the net!"
"Thanks, I'll go up now," I replied, sprinting up past the chasm to where I had first seen the Dauntless headquarters. I was halfway through my second stage of initiation, and visiting day had come and gone. The net rose up in front of me, and I didn't spot the unmissable man until it was too late, and I ran into him.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry," I apologised.
"Oh, no, it's fine," he laughed good-naturedly. "Do you know a Beatrice Prior?"
"Tris," I corrected automatically. "But yes, I'm her."
"Hmm, I wasn't informed of any name changes," he frowned. "Anyway, your instructor gave me permission to take you out."
"Erm, I have plans tonight," I said quietly. Christina and I were going to get a new tattoo each - I was planning on a Dauntless and Abnegation faction logo on each shoulder.
"This is more important," he said. "It's about education."
"I have the typical knowledge of a girl my age!" I exclaimed indignantly. "Unless you count Erudite girls! But I have knowledge of math, English, faction history and I can recite most of the Abnegation manifesto," I said proudly. The massive guy shook his head.
"You're coming with me," he said, as if that was that.
"I don't even know your name!"
"Rubeus Hagrid, but I'll be Professor Hagrid to you," he retorted.
"Why do you want to take me away?"
"Because we've only just found you!"
"Who are you? And what have you got to do with me?" At that, the professor paused. He grabbed my arm and I felt a twisting feeling in my stomach before wind ripped through my hair - even though we were underground. I shut my eyes tightly but when I opened them, we were no longer in Dauntless. We were in an alleyway which was bustling with life.
"Welcome to Diagon Alley," he said sullenly. "Go over to that bank and talk to a goblin, you can take out a bit of money and buy a wand. Professor McGonagall bought all your school supplies because you're starting so late."
"Take me back to Dauntless!" I demanded. "I don't care that it's not safe for me, I have friends there and competition! Peter and Molly and Drew will bully me if I go back now, they'll call me a coward for missing some of initiation!" Professor Hagrid just ignored me and pushed me towards the bank. I walked in and gaped. Sitting at every desk were... small, ugly creatures, who were counting out what looked like coins with their pointed fingers. I walked up to one of them. "Professor Hagrid instructed me to come here," I said.
"Beatrice Prior?" it squeaked.
"Tris," I said. "I used to be Beatrice, now I'm Tris." The creature frowned and pointed a long, crooked finger at me. A white light hit me in the chest, but I felt nothing. The elf thing hopped down and presented me with a key.
"Don't lose it," it instructed. I followed it down a long, twisting corridor and up and down various flights of stairs until we arrived outside what looked like a vault door. The thing asked for the key and I handed it over, confused. It put they key inside the door and, after a series of clicks, the door swung open. Inside the vault were piles upon piles of coins, gold, silver, bronze, and I felt rich. We had never been poor in Abnegation or in Dauntless; we had enough to survive and a little more. The elf gave me a small pouch and I filled it with the coins, careful to include the same amount of each type. I exited the vault and it locked behind me and the creature took me back down to where Professor Hagrid was waiting. He didn't talk, he just strode to another shop. He pointed me inside and I entered. A wizened old man appeared on the second floor above me and spoke, his voice barely audible.
"Miss Prior, I wondered when you'd be showing up in my shop."
