Abby Lockhart woke to the faint rumblings of the El outside her window, the
darkness of her bedroom immediately engulfing her. Fumbling on her bedside
table the bright green digits of her alarm clock read 3:30am. Groaning she
shifted tiredly in bed, and ruffled her messy hair with her hand. Removing
the bedclothes from her weary body she set her worn feet on the ground
beneath her.
In the dark she traced the way to the door with her feet. Two steps to the dresser, another four to the chair, two more to the door. Occasionally stepping on items of discarded clothing from the previous day. She had worked a double shift and as soon as she had got home climbed into bed in exhaustion.
Opening the door, the living room was bathed in a soft orange from the streetlights below. The light played with several of the objects in the room casting interesting shadows on the walls and floor. Making her way to the kitchen it took three hits on the wall before Abby could find the light switch. Flicking it on the instant light hit hard. Omitting a small shriek she blinked quickly a few times, hitting the switch on the coffee machine. She opted for de-caf and took the promptly boiled liquid ton the table. She set the scalding cup down and yawned lightly. She sat at the table in silence the only coming from the kitchen behind her.
Taking a sip of her coffee she cursed loudly. Retracing her steps in the dark towards the kitchen she headed to the fridge in search of milk for the fiery mixture in her hand. Pouring the milk into the mug she stirred it into the deep brown, almost chocolate looking blend. The color provoked a wave of familiarity from within her. The chestnut almost bronze color of the coffee was almost the exact version of the color of a certain some one else's eyes.
Sighing loudly she put the milk back in the fridge and her own eyes were soon guided back to the heated mug in her hands. Looking deep into the mixture she was startled by the shrill ring of the phone piercing the silence. Throwing the remainder of the coffee into the sink she hurried quickly in the direction of the phone.
"Hello."
"Hi."
The voice on the other end instituted so many different emotions of pure love and happiness that Abby was incapable of preventing the smile that etched itself from ear to ear on her face. Not that for one minute she would try and prevent herself from smiling, she was in love. The silence and darkness surrounding her were soon forgotten, all she could think about was him.
"I miss you so much, I can't wait to see you again."
"I can't stand being away from you, I hate it, I need you here beside me. I keep thinking about you and It distracts me from everything I'm doing."
An even bigger smile appeared on Abby's face. She was feeling the exact same way.
"I love you John."
"I love you too Abby."
"I hate to but I need to go, and you need to get some rest, it's late there."
"You're right, I need to go, goodnight."
"Goodnight."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"Goodinght."
"Goodnight."
The dark apartment didn't seem just as dark once Abby hung up the receiver. Even though Carter was in Africa, a million miles away from blustery Chicago it felt that Abby had a small part of him right there beside her. It didn't seem to matter that she had work in few hours, as she crawled into bed she felt like the happiest person alive.
