Disclaimer: the environment is Tolkien's, I just have fun with it.
Author's Note: this was written as a birthday present to my friend. I figured I'd post it up here. It's supposed to be in a ballad-style, I'm not sure how well that turned out.
Long ago, when the wood was green
a shadow grew and strengthened
a terrible war had been foreseen
woe to those who's years lengthened
their merriness began to wane
Now a child lived in the wood
sheltered from the way time flies
her hair was flame, her temper good
her eyes reflected the troubled skies
through her merriment was gained
Too soon she grew into maiden fair
learning of the battles fought
on distant plain and fumed air
her face more solemn than aught
merry voice sorrowing for the slain
Seasons passed and she as one
served many others in the land
of lovers she would have none
though friends as many as the sands
her merry heart yet remained
Singing blithely among flowers of blue
another heard her gentle tune
a brave traveler, fine and true
hair of the sun, eyes of the moon
his voice joined in the merry strain
Briefly light shone from her face
then battle called her love away
now the wood she did pace
fearful of the violent fray
the merry times with blood stained
Hope had been stolen by despair
then the traveler returned to her
torn by wrath of foes and care
she healed his wounds and grief deterred
their merry cadence soon regained
Now joyful music filled the wood
feast tables covered with food and drink
at the end the couple stood
by their kind their lives were linked
forever merry are the twain
Another Note: In case you can't figure it out,the first battle it refers to is the battle of Dagorlad, the second the battle of Five Armies. The race in reference is elves, the wood Mirkwood, the traveler IS NOT Legolas. Reviews and well written critiques are always welcome.
