If you ask any native Narnian what is the strangest thing about their wonderful country is you may be in for a surprise. Some might scoff and turn away from you, others could look at you as if your ignorant, some just may shake their heads and pray to Aslan you gain some sense. There all thinking the same thing, visitors. Some of the more tolerant creatures would pull those poor, poor ignorant visitors aside and explain to them.
"Honestly if you had any brains in that head of yours you could've thought of it yourself. The Lamp Post of course!" they'd say before they start away and turn back to give you a pitying look. The Lamp Post…really? Is the first thought that crosses the mind of every ignorantly confused visitor. Surely any sane person would have thought all the different beasts and birds would have been odd thing around.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. The Lamp Post is the oddest, strangest, most original thing in Narnia; even the dumb beasts know that. Most visitors try to be polite and nod in agreement, or grunt in acknowledgement, even though they're all thoroughly confused. Even the smartest and fiercest creatures swear by the Lamp Post. Sometimes said visitors look at the proud creatures and question their sanity.
"Are you saying I'm lying?" the proud beasts would ask those pesky visitors. They would stammer out a "No! Of course not!" because who would want to war with such a country?
All the visitors in Narnia were brought past the Lamp Post and all would examine it in awe. They would always ask that question, whether right there in front of the post or later somewhere else. Most would have the same reaction and all the Narnians would be stone-faced until they left and then they would let out loud guffaws and high pitched squeaks and caws and laugh at those poor ignorantly confused visitors. Even the mighty kings and queens would join in the fun sometimes, just to see the dumbfounded faces of their guest.
"You'd think they would know we were pulling their leg?" someone would blurt out between laughs. That question would cause all of the creatures present to lapse into tears mirth and laugh even more than before. Any witness to that event would have to say the strangest thing in the land of Narnia is a crowd of beasts crying or mirth in forests under the Lamp Post that started it all.
