Time and Sense slipped away to abandoned corners as he watched.
Watched as she caressed the sandy hair of another and kissed the lips of another.
Watched as the scene before him converted hopes (believable hopes, endearing hopes) into mocking illusions and everything crumbled.
Into mounds that became his loss, greater and greater, as realisation dawned and then gently swallowed him. A sandy edifice, a palace of his own labour gently burying him alive. Gently, just as she had tugged at his hand to show him what a world other than blackness was. She who had then smothered him before he reached this world.
Tears found his eyes and trailed tracks over his cheeks.
He drowned.
He didn't try to cling to any edges.
There weren't any.
