I actually both directly and indirectly put references in this, I guess I'll list them all at the end? I also intend on making of Classic chapters somewhat darker than Modern or Oddball chapters, due to the latter two generally expressing a more laid-back, comedic tone. Yes, I know Sonic OVA is canonical here, but the Classic Crew generally don't act crazy like Modern Sonic [1]. I also won't give everyone background, only the Mania Boys and Rosy, so no Robotnik, Metal Sonic, or Team Hooligan descriptions, sorry.
The first sign of this ensuing insanity takes place in Emerald Shores, where the main cast members are discussing things after a few months of isolation and various escapades.
"So guys, how was the adventure?" started Sonic. Now, before I don't have a chance to, I must explain my headcanon for this 'universe'. For Classic Sonic, I actually consider him to be the result of Robotnik's (Classic Eggman is called Robotnik for convienience's sake) failed attempt to create artificial Mobians, which is why he doesn't speak in Generations or Forces. Also due to this botched experiment, Sonic managed to gain a conscience, escaped to Checker Hill, and you know the rest [2]. He also is, for the sake of the fanfic, 12 years of age.
"Eh, it was okay. Would have gotten farther, but it turns out the rumours of GGT {I do abbreviate zones a lot here} having one of the highest annual homocide rates in the world [3] were true, and I'm fairly certain that drove Ray right out. I just based my decisions of his, and I hope he doesn't get scarred from what he saw." replied Mighty. His backstory is one of great disdain to him, as not even his best buddy Ray knows more than a few snippets. But, seeing as I am the writer of his backstory here, I will say this: the spirits in Spirited Sands aren't too keen to intruders... [4?]. He is also 13.
"Don't worry Mighty, I-I'm perfectly f-fine!" chimed in Ray. For backstory, he is 10 and, like Mighty, is mainly amnesiac about his younger years, so no one knows his story either. All the others know is that Mighty and Ray buddied up after their run-in with Sonic during their often forgotten adventure [5].
"Are you sure?" replied Sonic.
"Yeah, you've been really jittery ever since I walked in," said Rosy. I don't really have a backstory for her, though if I had to, I'd say it'd be like a Tails situation, except instead of waiting around she actually stumbled her way all the way to Little Planet and meeting Sonic [6]. I also consider her and Sonic to be seriously dating, unlike a certain other iteration who honestly should be lucky their Amy still likes them [7] Also, she is 9.
"Guys, guys, hold the presses!" screamed Tails as he sprinted through the makeshift corridor in his new lab. His backstory is synonymous to those present in other fanfictions, including his general age of 8, so I won't go too in-depth on it.
"What is it?" everyone else replied.
"We just got news from Fang that something's gone horribly wrong over at Mirage Saloon!" (I do consider Team Hooligan to begrudgingly ally with the Classic Crew)
"Did that blasted bird finally crack and get himself into a coma from the unteenth bar fight [8]?" Mighty grumbled under his breath.
"No, we'll see when we get there. Also, remember Mighty, just because Bean has diagnosed dementia doesn't mean he acts sporadic all the time. What do you think Bark does when he's not helping hunt treasure [9]?"
"Fair point..."
To lighten up the mood, Sonic gets up on the table and says in his fake Australian accent [10], "Well then, what are ya waiting for? T's only 30 miles cross the island. I can make it der in no time flat, let's go!"
-15 minutes later-
"There you lil buggers are!" shouted Fang.
"Hey Nack, just came to check on ya based on what Tails said." replied Sonic.
"Sonic, jeez, did you discover a new way through Hill Top or something? Never thought you'd outrun the Tornado." cried Ray from a few yards away.
"You could say I found a new route, yes [11]."
"1. Stop calling me that, and 2. Back to the problem at hand." solemnly replied Fang.
"S-Sonic, take a look..." fearfully called Tails.
And Sonic could only look on, with everyone else, at the chaos behind him, buildings up in flames, some bodies whose status were unknown, all that, they were all left in awe, at what could have possibly happened, who could have caused such a thing, and what could possibly be done about it.
Wow, that ending was something to visualize, wasn't it? Now, as I promised, I'll explain the references and addons I tagged throughout the chapter:
1. Some modern scripts, like Colors, really show off how much Sega and Sonic Team know about comedy and story telling.
2. Although it did take 3 months of isolation and adaptation, Sonic did eventually go on to beat Eggman in the events of Sonic 1.
3. GGT, or Glittery Grave-town, is a kaizo level, designed to be notoriously hard. That means lots of deaths. In terms of numbers, I'd say 2nd highest in Mobius, only behind Sawblade City.
4. Anyone who has seen a walkthrough of Sandopolis Act 2 knows about the murderous ghouls, but how do they tie in to Mighty's backstory? You'll have to wait and see...
5. SegaSonic the Hedgehog, released for arcades in 1993. Older debut than Knuckles.
6. Sonic CD, how do you think she managed to get from the shores of Never Lake to Palmtree Panic? She must have some determination to climb all the way up that long anchor chain, since she obviously doesn't have Super Speed.
7. Circa Generations opening birthday cutscene
8. I do consider Mirage Saloon here to have many fights, as it is a wild-west bar, after all. So many, in fact, that it technically has the highest annual homocide rate of any Sega-endorsed stage, barely beating out Daredevil's Descent.
9. Also not canon, but it does explain Bean's obsession with explosive (surely the Dynamite Dux had nothing to do with it, they are adults after all. Also, in Triple Trouble, Fang does show likings towards the Chaos Emeralds I believe, so there you go.
10. I would say Sonic got it from either Fang or Vector (wait, I never mentioned Classic Chaotix or their locations, hmm... I'll cover that later.)
11. The 2013 Sonic 2 IOS port from Christian Whitehead does contain many level updates just like Sonic 1 IOS, be it a secret nook or, as in Hill Top 1's case, an entirely different opening route for Tails and Knuckles. Wonder how Sonic even got there...
And with that, thank you for reading Chapter 2. Be sure to review if you so choose and I will be glad to hear your feedback and update accordingly. Until next time, SuperJMC, signing off!
