Chapter 1
"Ready, Khait? Ready?" He patted me excitedly from behind. I could barely hear him over my heartbeat deafening my ears. This is the day we put all our training into work, all the fighting simulations, all the running and works outs will pay off tonight. What was about to happen was the biggest act of thieving ever in the Egypt. Well not really, it just seemed like that to us, the bunch of kids, at the time.
"Ok Khait, go!"
I sprinted forward as fast as I could, almost tripping at the start from the sudden jolt, I bolted towards the two guards standing in front of a high wall with tears streaming down my cheeks, "Sirs! A crocodile-! On the farm!" They immediately came to my aid and ran towards the direction I came from, but not being able to go any farther once the wooden clubs knocked them out.
"An innocent girl with her crying plea for help…" A figure walked from where the guards lay, "Excellent work. Everyone, step two!" He gestured forward and more figures came forth and proceeded to climb over the wall. The guy was Anemro; the leader of our gang. Tough, cunning and experienced, he's learnt his thieving tricks from all along the Nile.
We were like ants, using teamwork to get over the wall and onto the other side, and what a site it was! Palm trees and ferns, paths and a pool! But no time for sightseeing, Anemro gave the order and we snuck next to a doorway and another young member, Mkhei, did his impersonation of the young boy who lived in this temple, and cried loudly, drawing the guard out of his spot. If anyone, he was the good actor. Anyway, we acted quickly and Anemro sent in the smaller, stealthier members of our gang into the vault room where the guard was previously at. That included me.
Once we got in we started searching for the pricy items. Going through the baskets and wooden boxes, I was the most nimble and took the best looking items, including this golden box that contained several items, which was annoyingly heavy. We got out quickly to find the guard gagged and restrained, and the others waiting to help lighten our load. This was a lot easier than I thought, until the guard broke free from the ropes, then we were sent into a frenzy like insects.
He attacked us, knocking the others into the walls and smashing their heads against the path, I was quick and one of the few to get to the walls, but unfortunately not quick enough to be helped over. I was too small to scale the wall myself and the box weighed me down. I looked back, seeing the guard looking for the rest of us and frantically opened the box – I couldn't leave empty handed, but I couldn't take the whole box. Collars, belts, bracelets, a crown. I began putting them on as it would be easier that way to carry them, even if I was in awe of how heavy they were.
"Khait!" Mkhei jumped down from the wall just as I was putting on the crown, he took it from me and put it back into the box, "I'll carry it." He said.
Yes, the box was more important than me, and I acknowledged that. He boosted me over the wall but as I turned to lift him over, the guard was catching up to him, "Mkhei behind you!" I yelled in horror.
The rest of the night became a blur.
