Towards her Destiny

A Sophie one- shot takes place as Sophie sneaks off after her 'thing' with Ben.

Disclaimer: I own nothing but my good looks.

She stood watching the caravan of trucks and trailers weave down the dusty trail outside Damascus, NE, feeling as if she was no more a ghost, a vapor then a real person.

Her heart was sore, her body wrecked with grief and fear, pain and love.

Her eyes – a beautiful brown watched them depart, leaving her unknowingly behind.

She felt ashamed, guilty – she knew she was wrong, running out like this and even as she sat and watched them leave she knew that as much as she had wanted to stay, she had to go.

That voice had spoken to her, all but commanded her.

It's boom, it's power and she knew it was the voice of her destiny.

It was her fate to go.

Ben would not understand; he would be crushed when he realized she was gone.

She ached for him, for all of them – they were all she had in the world now that her mother was gone.

She reached for her suitcase and hoisted it. Her hands were still raw from digging that monstrous ditch.

It didn't matter.

Ben – no, he didn't matter either. He was just another guy.

Yet, to her – she knew it was more; it had been spiritual, religious, joyful and drenched in sorrow, edged with pain when they had made love. She shivered now as she remembered the feel of his against her skin.

But, she could not ignore the voice. It beckoned her and she knew like Ben, she had a destiny to fulfill and if they were meant to be then the stars above would align accordingly.

If the cards were right then at the end of all things, she would be in his arms. They would have that moment.

They would have forever.

She had no choice as he had no choice as any of them had no choice.

She had to go and she had to go now.

In the west, the voice called – commanded and waited for her to come and serve.

On the wind now, she heard a faint whisper – it said her name.

She looked once more at the departing Carnival, which held all she had known and all she had loved and then turned back in the direction of the breeze, the voice.

It was stronger now, more urgent….

"Goodbye Ben," she whispered under her breath to her absent lover, the one whose lips she still tasted on her mouth.

Then with a heart full of sorrow, she started walking towards west.
