Pushed into the Shadows

Ken was easily pushed into the shadows. It was a side-effect from having a genius for an older brother – a famous genius for an older brother.

Not that he didn't love his older brother; he did. But it was hard being in the shadows; the light was warmer, more inviting. But the light also burned, whenever he stood alone with no-one beside him, holding his hand to ease the burden a little. Then the shadows were more comforting anyway; in fact, he couldn't not be in the shadows otherwise his frail little body would be covered in burns and then no-one would be able to touch him.

And the hands that always pushed him into the shadows left enough blisters. They left angry wounds that let him mull bitterly over his brother's glistening times in the light. He did love his brother, but why did one of them get the stage while the other was stuck behind the curtains? Why couldn't he stand out like that; why couldn't the sun let him stand next to his brother?

He never does get to; his replaces his brother in the light instead, but by then he's started loving the darkness and the light can never catch up.
