It so happened that due to insert random excuse, I found myself playing with a Harry Potter title generator. In the process, it occurred to me that some of the titles could actually refer to a tangible situation... so I wound up writing down my ideas. I made a point out of hitting the 100 word mark exactly, because a) I tend to rant on and on and on and on and need to practise being brief, and b) because I am lazy. So here are the results.

Hermione Granger and the Crystal Wand

Hermione Granger never told it to anyone, but when she was little, she used to play-pretend that she could do magic. She would picture herself as the good fairy godmother, or a kindly witch, and she would wave her hands imperiously and imagine things happening. How it all worked was crystal clear. It was simple and real to her, and it made her feel strong – strong and powerful. But that all was before the Hogwarts letter, before the visit to Diagon Alley and before her first wand.

Now, when she's holding it in her hands, the magic seems so fragile.
