The Pancake Fairy

"I had a great time tonight, Jamal. You should do this more often." Jamal's date, Richard, breathes against his lips. He met Richard at a concert and they went out for a quick dinner and movie in true old school fashion. He wants to end the night immediately; Lola has to be at her ballet rehearsal at 9 and he can't afford to oversleep for some romance that won't make it past one night.

"Richard, you're a nice guy, but I'm afraid we're going to have to cut the night short. I got some things I need to take care of and as much as I'd love to get to know you, I'm going to have to cut this short." Jamal replies. They're at the foot of his apartment, his back is pressed to the door and the smell of alcohol is on their breaths.

"C'mon, man. I like you, you like me, we're two single men living it up in the city. No commitments, no romance, just fun. Okay?"

Richard looks so pretty; it's been forever since he had a little fun of his own outside of his ex-boyfriend. Lola is a heavy sleeper, he can set his alarm early, and Richard understands of the etiquette surrounding the morning after.

His lips pepper Jamal's neck.

Okay, maybe this one time…

Jamal wakes up early in the morning to find Richard gone and the house smelling faintly of pancakes. Groaning, he hops out of his bed, gets dressed, and makes his way to the kitchen.

Lola is sitting at the island table in her princess costume and ballet slippers, kicking her feet and eating a pancake that's drenched in strawberry syrup.

"Hey, princess. How'd you sleep?" Jamal ruffles her wild hair. She laughs.

"I slept good, Daddy. I woke up and found this strange man hopping down the hallway in his underpants. I asked him who he was and he said he's the pancake fairy. He made me pancakes and he headed out the door."

Jamal's cheeks start flushing red.

"Pancake fairy, huh?"

"Yep. What was he doing in your room? Was he giving you pancakes in bed?"

Jamal sputters.

"Uh…umm…let's get you ready for that ballet rehearsal, honey."

"Okay!"
