The Missing Prologue:
Josh, wearing a rumpled pair of suit pants and a tattered oxford, woke up slowly in a strange alley. He sat up and ran his hand through his hair, trying to remember how heíd gotten there. Leaning against the wall, he tried to relax, using the technique Stanley had shown him. Josh surveyed his surroundings and his heart raced; none of the signs or billboards were in English. Stumbling out of the alley, he made his way to a telephone booth. Flipping through the phone book, he discovered his location; Hong Kong. Josh took a deep breath and dialed a familiar number.
A woman answered, "Leo McGarry's office."
"Margaret, thank god," Josh let out a sigh of relief. "It's Josh...I need to talk to Leo immediately."
"Please hold on," she said, her voice unusually shaky.
A gruff voice came on the line, "This is McGarry"
"Leo, Iím so glad to hear your voice. I just woke up in Hong Kong. I don't know how long I've been here or how I got here. What the hell is going on? One minute I'm in my apartment, next minute I'm in some alley in the middle of Asia! What happened?" Josh said, his voice becoming increasingly louder.
There was a lengthy pause.
"Hello?" Josh questioned.
"Hong Kong..." Leo trailed off. "Get to the Ritz-Carlton there as quickly as possible. You know how to get there?"
"Uhh, I think so. I'll take a cab."
"I'll make sure they're expecting you," Leo told him.
"Okay," Josh said, hanging up the phone. He turned and hailed a taxi.
Director Kendall glanced around the room, gathered his papers that were loose around the desk together, sighed, and then said softly to himself, "We found him."
He began to walk towards his office at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. He sat down at his desk, and opened a drawer, and took out a small rectangular notebook. He leafed through the pages, until he stopped at the section marked with the letter "M". He scanned the pages for a name, a name in which he was supposed to contact if there was any leads on the missing person. He hadn't been in contact with him for five months until this morning. His eyes stared at the name at paper; Leo McGarry, Chief of Staff, The White House. Eying the number, he picked up the phone and dialed the number. Moments later someone on the other end picked up the call.
"Leo McGarry," answered a woman's voice.
"Yes, this is Agent Kendall, Iím calling to speak to Mr. McGarry."
"He's in a meeting right now, I can give him a message, or I can have him call you back," Margaret explained.
"Can you tell him it's concerning an old friend?" Kendall asked.
She paused and put the phone on hold, she got up from her desk, and opened the door leading to the Oval Office. "Leo, there's someone on the phone for you."
"Take a message or something," Leo replied waving his hand in the air without looking up from the files he was reading.
"Sir, it's about an old friend." Leo finally looked up at Margaret, and picked up the phone on his desk, motioning for his assistant to leave the room. "Leo McGarry speaking."
"Sir, this is Kendall from Langley. I had the guys here run a trace on the phone call you got this morning; it's really him. Josh Lyman is alive."
