In Laws
Halt was scared. He would never admit it but he was. Looking back as he ran across the courtyard he saw the scariest thing he could have ever imagined: Lady Paline's mother. She had arrived about an hour earlier to see how Paline had been doing since she had been away. But if you ask Halt, It was to ruin his life. All he had to do was walk through the door and be seen for the torture to begin.
Paline's mother's name is Agitha and it sure fit her in Halt's opinion. She was a rough, hard woman who tolerated no back talk. Her hair was black, her face tight. When she smiled it looked as if she were in pain. She only wore dark purple dresses now a days and kept that nose of hers in the air. But the worst part were her eyes. They were green and, to Halt anyway, they looked as if they glowed. "How did Paline end up the child of that?" Halt thought as he started climbing the wall, Agitha close on his heels. "Where is Paline when I need her?"
Halt reached the top of the wall and sat there a moment. "Finally! Out of the reach of that mad wo-."
His thought was interrupted as a cross bolt went whizzing by his head. Did I forget to tell you that Agitha is a Genovesan assassin? Yes, I think I did. "Get down here you coward! And you think you are good enough for my daughter! You didn't even invite me to the wedding!" Agitha raged as she reloaded the crossbow. "Now Agitha, let's be reasonable. I didn't even know you existed. So let's not move to hasty." Halt pleaded, all the while looking for an escape route. He couldn't jump back down to the courtyard with her there. He couldn't jump down the other side either thanks to the cliff. (But if he had to choose he would choose the cliff.) "Hasty!" She yelled. "I'm not being hasty! I've waited about an hour now haven't I?" Halt paled. "Yes but-." "But nothing!" She took aim and started to squeeze the trigger. "Mother!" Halt and Agitha jumped. "Paline!" They said. Although Halt said it with relief and Agitha said it with disappointment. Paline walked up to Agitha, took the crossbow, and started gripping her mother out. Halt took this time to climb down and slip off around the castle towards the front door. He bumped into Gilan as he rounded one of the corners. "Hey Halt," Gil said. "heard the in law came. What do you think of her so far?" "She's horrible!" Halt shouted. Gil laughed. "Aren't all in laws? My dad's in laws used to talk him to death! But don't worry too much. How bad could it be? She won't kill you. You'll live." As Gil walked away Halt mumbled under his breath: "I hope so."
The End
Hey I hope you like this. I got the idea, with a friends help, when I was trying to figure out what Halt's Peril was about. I know. I'm weird. But this just fit. Review if you like. If not, don't.
