"Sir." A man said, entering the office. "We have a Michael Hanover outside. He just confessed to the murder that we're holding all these girls for. He has a record for armed robbery and a warrant for his arrest. No one has ever been able to track him down."

"What." The man said, rising from his chair. "Where is he?"

Zack looked around the gray/white interrogation room. "I did it." He said flatly. "I took a .38 caliber and shot the man square in the head. No questions, no pleading, he never saw it coming."

"But... Why." The man asked.

"No reason." Zack replied.

"Mr. Hanover." The man said. "There must have been a reason. Did he steal from you? Harm you? Threaten you?"

"He was researching something that he had no right to." Zack said. "Now, if I'm not mistaken, there are some men waiting to take me to a military facility."

"Perhaps." The man said. "Perhaps not."

"Sir." Zack said. "Please inform Colonel Lydecker that X5-599 is ready."

The man rose and nodded before leaving the room. "I have no idea who this Michael Hanover is, or how the murdered man ties into the government. But play back that tape for Lydecker and prepare the prisoner for transport."

Zack remained silent in the room, silently praying that Max would be released before anyone got a good look at her barcode.

"Mr. Hanover." The man said, upon his re-entry. "They're here to take you."

"Thank you." Zack said, and rose to meet the armed guards. He remained still as they cuffed his arms and legs and pushed him from the small room.

"I thought I taught you better 599." Lydecker said at his approach. "What did you hope to accomplish. 452 is probably long gone by now. You sacrificed yourself for nothing."

Zack did not reply as the men escorted him from the building. In the distance, he saw Max stop. "Go Maxie." He thought. "Don't stop." He watched her leave swiftly as he shuffled off to the helicopter.
