Chapter 1- Lucy's Dying
"She's flatlining"
Lucy Knight had been transferred to the OR after being brutally stabbed in the chest, abdomen, and back. The ER doctors and nurses had worked feverishly to save the life of their beloved medical student. After Kerry used the sternal saw on Lucy's chest, they were able to get her heart working again, but she had to go to the OR to repair the damage. While in the OR however, Lucy suffered a pulmonary embolism. Now the doctors weren't so sure that she would survive.
"Ms. Knight?" Dr. Robert Romano asked with a worry in his voice
Dr. Elizabeth Corday was in the room also. And she was showing definite signs of nervousness
"Ms Knight?" Romano asked again
Still no answer.
"Oh my God" Romano whispered to himself. "Elizabeth get the paddles."
Elizabeth got the crash cart and handed the paddles to Romano.
"Charge to 200"
"Clear"
Nothing
"Charge to 250"
"Clear"
Still no heartbeat
"Charge to 300"
"Clear"
Nothing.
"She's in V-Fib" said Elizabeth
"Charge to 350"
"Clear"
The monitor showed that Lucy's heart was slowly failing
"She's asystole"
"Charge to 360"
"Clear"
No heartbeat
"360 again"
"Clear"
The monitor just showed a flatline, and the all too familiar beeping of the monitor was heard.
"Robert" Elizabeth said with a cry in her voice.
"No Elizabeth, we could still save her."
"Robert."
Romano reluctantly let go of Lucy's heart which he had been carefully massaging.
"Time of death, 2:56."
Meanwhile...
Dr. John Carter was lying in the OR recovery room. He had also been stabbed, but his injuries were not as severe. The doctors were able to repair the damage he had before he lost alot of blood. Dr. Peter Benton, Carter's old teacher, walked in to check on him, and saw that he was awake.
"Hey man, how are you feeling?"
"Not so well Dr. Benton. It feels like somone is burning my back with an iron."
"Im sorry to say this, but you are going to feel like that for a while."
"Geez" Carter mumbled
"You gave us quite a scare in there. We thought we were going to lose you."
Carter closed his eyes and swallowed hard.
"How's Lucy?"
"You should get some rest. You just had-"
"Just tell me how she is damnit."
"Im sorry to be the one who has to tell you this but umm," Peter paused. Not knowing how to break the news to Carter. "Lucy suffered from a Pulmonary Emobolism. Drs. Corday and Romano tried their hardest to save her but im afraid she died. Im so sorry Carter." "You have to know that it wasn't your fault"
Carter just ignored him and started crying.
