As the Dawn Treader ploughed through the dark waters, surrounded by the eerie green mist, Lucy heard whispering voices. The mist was tempting and trying to frighten her by turns. She looked about her, and saw that everyone else was similarly affected.

In a quest for something wholesome to think about, to shut out the whispers, her thoughts turned to the beautiful naiad who had warned her several days before. Suddenly she remembered the merfolk who used to sing in the waters before Cair Paravel. It was said that evil things could not stand the sound of mer voices.

Well, Lucy was no mermaid. But perhaps singing would help. It would at least give everyone something else to think about. With that in mind, she begged Aslan to help her. Then she took a deep breath, opened her mouth, and began to sing. She chose a common Narnian folk song that praised the Lion.

Instantly, all the men were startled out of their fearful dazes. They stared at her, and eventually began moving about the ship as they normally would. The mist no longer seemed to affect them.

She continued to sing song after song as they found the last sword and got the final lord on the ship. Her voice seemed to soothe him. She continued to sing as they turned the ship and steadily made their way back to the light. She continued to sing as Edmund - carried by dragon Eustace and accompanied by Reepicheep - went to place the last sword on Aslan's Table. And she continued to sing as Dark Island fell, and the people enslaved by the mist were set free. She finally ceased her song when Edmund returned with Eustace - no longer a dragon.

As the sun kissed her face, Lucy smiled. She thought she heard a whisper in her ear that told her she had done well. She looked to the east with a happy sigh.
