If Kira would just tell the truth, Near would be able to put him out of his misery. No, Near wasn't so sure he'd be able to issue that order now—the order of Light's death would crush him with its weight.

Near stared in the mirror, his reflection still and his eyes hard as he though about what everything had come down to. Light was lying to him about being Kira. Kira was lying about being Light. So far, Light was safe, just as he had been during all of Lawliet's life.

"Our valued destiny comes to nothing." The lyrics of one of the songs Mello used to play (trying to get Near out of his shell) finally made sense. Kira would have to die, so his destiny (which he thought would make him a god) was really nothing. And Near, who thought for all the world that he would end up being Light's partner, would not be able to have his valued destiny. He would waste away to nothing. Near let out a long sigh and shuffled away from the mirror.

Flicking off the lights he emerged from the bathroom with deadened eyes.

"Time to put the plan into motion." He paused, "It's time to kill Yagami Light." His employees shifted, unsure if Near's seriousness. One man leaned back and spoke calmly.

"Why Yagami Light? I thought we were going after Kira."

Near nodded, "We are. Light will tell me the truth. I just have to talk to him face to face."
