And I forgot
To tell you I love you.
And the night's too long,
I'm cold here without you.
I Love You - Sarah McLachlan
Gil Grissom walked silently and purposefully across the grass, passing dozens of stone monuments as he moved. He paid no attention to the route he took; in the months since it had happened he had visited this place everyday, his feet knew the way instinctively. His eyes caught sight of the large willow tree, its branches hanging protectively over the newer looking stone, shielding it from the light drizzle that had just begun falling.
He stopped next to the marker and ran his hand over the rough surface, fingers tracing the carved letters forming words he'd hoped he'd never have to read:
Catherine Willows
March 23rd 1962-November 16th 2006
Beloved mother, daughter, sister, friend.
"Never doubt, never look back."
Grissom crouched, rereading the last line, remembering the first time he'd heard her say it, which led, inevitably to the painful memory of the last time he'd seen her alive.
They'd been called to a homicide in Henderson; bugs and blood spatter - their respective specialties. They'd just arrived at the scene and were crossing the street to the taped off house when a car had careened round the corner, speeding towards them. Before either of them had had time to react the car had slammed into Catherine, sending her flying through the air before it sped off. He'd raced to her side, gathering her broken body in his arms while Detective Vartann had radioed for an ambulance. Her eyes had fluttered open and she'd coughed, bright red blood trickling from the corner of her mouth and across her porcelain skin. She'd whispered words about Lindsey, a message of love she begged him to pass on. Then her eyes closed and she was still. She'd remained in his arms even while the paramedics confirmed what he already knew; she was gone.
The days that followed had been a blur. Upon hearing of her mother's death, Lindsey had broken down. The team had been devastated as well; the only saving grace was the fact they'd caught the person responsible, an alcoholic on his way to buy more booze.
The funeral had been the hardest. Somehow he'd managed to deliver the eulogy. Watching the wooden box containing her beautiful body as it was lowered into the ground, Grissom had felt the last piece of his shattered heart break completely. He'd been the last to leave the graveside, eventually dragged away at by Jim at nightfall.
Now, knelt on the damp grass beside her eternal resting place, he finally managed to vocalise the words he'd never had the courage to let her hear in life.
"I love you Catherine. And I always will."
