"I remember a man." She said, tilting her head towards the window curtained by the cascading rain.
He paused and looked at her; an inquisitive eyebrow raised, but resumed his work when she merely stared.
She didn't care if he wasn't listening; she was too old and too used to silence.
"He was kind," she continued, ignoring the constant staccato of the keyboard. "Gentle."
She remembered dancing to her favourite song, the man gently guiding her novice footwork; dancing to a song she had forgotten the title of.
She remembered being taken to fancy Italian restaurants. Remembered the taste of her first pizza but could not recall the face of the man who told her to try it- despite her moans and protests.
And she stopped remembering, stopped talking, stopped thinking and hugged Cheese-kun tighter.
She was too old and too weary for such trivial nostalgia.
The typing stopped, but he continued facing the screen. "Do you miss him?"
"No."
After all, how can you miss someone whose face you have forgotten? Whose name cannot be recalled? Whose only lingering impressions were gentle caresses and kind smiles?
"It's only small talk. That's all." She said with perfected boredom and closed her eyes.
Moments later he turned around, but she was already inside the covers and facing the wall, Cheese-kun wedged tightly between her arms.
It's only small talk. That's all.
After all, it will only be too soon before she starts forgetting again.
