Author's Note: Once again, for formality's sake, I am going to blaze through the introductory information. This is day six of my Fitzsimmons Six-Word Story Countdown until the premier of season two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ABC and Marvel own Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., along with the wonderful characters and the lovely plot, and any mistakes in this are my own due to the fact that I currently do not have a Beta.
All they need is an opportunity.
Melinda May and Phil Coulson had been sifting through the various S.H.I.E.L.D. protocols and codes at an agonizingly slow rate, determining which ones they wanted to remain when they began rebuilding the organization. There were a quite a few they were sure that were planted by those affiliated with Hydra, but most of them remained behind to be enforced once again in the future.
The hours dragged on as May continued to recite the original protocols, allowing Coulson to accept, deny, or modify them. "Section 35F," May continued, her voice still confident and concise despite the amount of time they had been working on the project for, "No S.H.I.E.L.D. agent may have romantic relations with another agent in their unit. No fraternization is permitted, and those discovered to be dating or wed to another agent from the same unit may be removed from S.H.I.E.L.D. without trial or any type of defense. However, those in different units within a division or different divisions entirely may request permission and proceed if it is granted."
"Get rid of it."
His words did not surprise her, but she had not quite expected them either. "Coulson, are you sure you want to discard Section 35F?" May had violated that particular portion of the protocol with Grant Ward, and she had ended up betrayed and, though she concealed it well, heartbroken. It was a section that she firmly believed in and was reluctant to eradicate.
However, Coulson was thinking of something else entirely, his gaze transfixed upon the scientists crowded in their shared lab outside his window. They were inevitably bickering about something, possibly whatever new invention they had begun that week, but there was no anger or malicious intent behind the words. Within a few seconds, the banter transformed into laughter, and the muted sound echoed in Coulson's office.
If he could give Fitzsimmons anything, he wanted to give them this – the opportunity to become more than friends or partners if the time would come.
"Yeah, I'm sure."
Author's Note: This is another one of the oneshots that currently ranks in my favorites list. Even though Fitzsimmons doesn't say a word in this, I simply like the idea of Coulson somewhat shipping Fitzsimmons. Anyways, there should be more six-word story fanfics posted shortly, and there are the first few posted on my profile as well.
Remember, what takes me quite a while to write only takes you a few moments to review, whether it be a critical critique or simply a phrase you enjoyed, and it definitely helps me improve my writing!
