The museum was busy as usual, the newly added Native American exhibit being the main attraction of the public's excitement. For Emily this was her tenth day in a row sitting on a bench in the middle of the Egypt exhibit, which was sparsely populated due to the new exhibit. She sat in front of three sarcophaguses and the golden shimmering tablet nestled into the wall behind them. It looked different to her than she had remembered cleaner maybe? She couldn't be sure it had been four years since the last time she had seen it, maybe her memories had dulled it down.
"Ladies and Gentlemen the museum will be closing in 10 minutes, please make your way to the exit"
Emily glanced over at her laptop that sat open next to her with the word "THESIS" bolded at the top with a flashing cursor beside it just waiting to have something more than one word behind it. With a sigh, she closed her computer and packed it up along with her sketchbook and made her way towards the main doors. Dragging her feet Emily scanned the room one last time because tomorrow night will be her big night, the night she was going to sneak herself into the museum after hours. She knew she had at least five minutes after the intercom announcement before any of the guards could make it to the exhibit, as if on cue she heard a voice behind her.
"EXCUUUUSE ME! Did you not hear the intercom, come on lets go we have a museum to clean up."
As Emily turned around she was met with a blonde night guard who stood about as tall as she was, not wanting to make scene she whispered a small "sorry" and hurried out.
That night she barely slept going over what to do again and again in her head. It was like when you get that one single line from a song stuck on replay in your head and you just wish you could knock yourself out. She didn't want to think about it anymore, she was confident and if she loosened the screws on the vent she was planning to hide in anymore she's sure the grate would fall off from someone looking at it too hard. Plus the new exhibit would grab everyone's attention as it had for the last week what would make tomorrow any different?
"Ladies and Gentlemen the museum will be closing in 10 minutes, please make your way to the exit"
This was it Emily already had everything packed up into her backpack and was hovering around the vent, was she actually going to do this? When you have a job ridding on a thesis about an ancient Egyptian family that happens to be five feet away from you sometimes things get crazy. Or that's what Emily told herself and she pulled her backpack into the vent in front of her and held the grate up.
Her breath caught in her chest as she heard the steps of someone walking through the exhibit. This was it. The steps walked up to the three sarcophaguses and from what Emily could hear over the vent, it sounded like the displays were being unlocked? Not opened fully just unlocked. Emily crouched there for at least ten more minutes, but her choice of shorts had backfired on her because the metal was beginning to bite at her skin. Positive no one else was in the room she slowly dropped the grate and pushed her backpack forward. AS she stood up, her knees screamed at her and she slightly winced, but she had a task to accomplish.
The first thing Emily did was pull out her phone and start taking pictures of the tablet up close as well as the displays. For so long those red ropes had held her back but not now. The tablet that she had dreamed of her whole time in Cairo was there right in front of her. She slowly put her hand out towards it pausing for only a second, moving her fingers back ever so slightly. Taking a deep breath she ran her fingers over the middle panels, and then it began to glow. Startled, she took several steps back almost tripping over that damn red rope. The glowing tablet was the least of her concerns as she heard movement behind her. Small rumbles turned to rattling and shaking which caused her to jump and hide behind the nearest pillar and of course dropping her phone in the process.
As she ran out to go get it the lids flew off of the displays and she decided behind her pillar was exactly where she should be. "well technically at home is where you should be but we're way past that" she thought to herself.
"My jewel did you hear something? " Emily was certain she made a small noise but then she would have to be breathing to do so, and at this moment she was closer to passing out than making any noises.
"No my love but there is this small device on the ground that I have found" A woman's voice, the number of people in the room were starting to concern Emily.
"Mother it's a cell phone and I do believe I heard something moving about before we came out. Tilly isn't usually around this time" There was a small pause in the conversation and Emily was weighing her options, which were becoming less and less appealing by the second.
"Maybe we should call Tilly and do a small sweep of the museum, call the guards." And with the Emily made her choice.
"Nooooo, no, no ,no, no. Please don't call the guards it's mine and I snuck in here I'm sorry I have no idea… I didn't know ….."
She stopped as she faced the two people in front of her, they were in full blown Egyptian king and queen attire.
"Whoa, am I missing something because the last time I saw someone dressed like that was…"
Again her sentence was cut short by a spear to her back from the very large, very angry looking Anubis statue that stood behind her. Emily immediately dropped to her knees and held her hands above her head.
"That's enough keep her there, but don't hurt her" The words were Egyptian but Emily understood them perfectly, she hadn't gone to Cairo for four years for nothing. She turned to see who her savior was and her heart skipped a beat, or stopped beating she wasn't sure. Her stomach dropped, the kind of drop that feels like your soul just took a vacation and it's just empty. Except she wasn't empty she was flushed and wide eyed and she could feel her heart now pounding a hundred times a second. Only one word escaped her mouth.
"You."
"You." Was all she got in return from the equally shocked and wide eyed Egyptian Pharaoh standing before her.
