When the sonographer moved the transducer over Ran's skin, Shinichi could feel his heart thump in his chest. They'd experienced no particular problems so far, Ran's pregency was completely normal, but it didn't change the fact that adrenaline flowed through Shinichi the same way it did when he faced the organisation. But they were gone now; Ran perfectly healthy. He had nothing to worry about. It was just he didn't like not being in control.
"The baby's healthy."
The sonographer's words made almost all of Shinichi's muscles relax. He let the air leave his lungs. Everything was fine.
"It's a boy," the sonographer added, wiping the gell of Ran's bump.
Shinichi reached out his hand to Ran. "Let's go."
Despite only being 16 weeks pregnant, Ran let Shinichi pull her up.
As they winded their way towards the hospital exit, still holding hands, Shinichi turned to look at Ran. "A boy, huh," he mused, "that knocks out Natsuo, Agatha, Marp..."
Ran sighed. "I know I said you that you could name the baby, but why are all the names you come up with related to detective novels?"
Shinchi squeezed her hand. "I couldn't name him after a real one."
If he'd named the baby after Hattori or one the the other detectives he knew, he'd never see the light if day, he'd always get he'd the fact that he named his son after one of them rubbed in his face. If he named the baby after a dead detective, the living ones would wonder why he didn't choose them. Fictional detective or author was the way to go.
Ran glanced up at him. "You know, you could just give him a normal name, that isn't related to mysteries or detective work..."
Shinichi pouted. "But I like detectives, and you said I could name the baby."
"Well, never mind."
Shinichi listened as his wife recited names of mystery authors, names which he'd drilled into her head though his nerdy rambling. "Edowaga Ranpo, Sir Authur Conan Doyle, Kudo Yuusaku..."
"I am not naming him after my father."
"I gathered that," Ran teases, poking him on the nose, "So we can't name him after Zenigata Heiji or Akechi Kogoro either..."
Shinichi snorted. "I'm not naming him after anyone I know, particularly not that old man."
Ran glared at him.
"Your father," corrected Shinichi.
As they walked to the car, Shinichi wrote all the names down on his detective notebook and crossed off each name they decided against.
"It's just Ranpo left," said Shinichi, crossing off Arthur and Doyle, "I guess that's his name."
"There's still one left." Ran pointed another name that hadn't been crossed though.
The name between Arthur and Doyle.
Conan.
"But that name is..." Shinichi mumbled, "I can't name him after someone I knew."
"You didn't know Conan, you were Conan," Ran replied, "He's two years of your life, I think naming our baby after his father would be a great idea."
Shinichi's eyes widened, he scratched the back of his neck. "Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Feeling his cheeks redden Shinichi leaned towards Ran and gently pressed his lips against hers. "Conan's a great name, for a great baby," he whispered between their kiss, "But, you're pretty great too."
