The night was chilling, and it was the only place to comfort. A window was propped open, and I perched on the sill. It had been another one of those nights.
A random person was destined to die as her eyes closed, and by the time I checked the news in the morning, the victims would be dead. It was startling, and my heart shook. It always happens.
A feeling of being watched had my pale skin prickling. Licking the top of her lip, rolling from the window, I landed on the ground in the apartment room. Shooting to my feet and crossing to the only light, I flicked off the low lamp. Laying in the bed that was mine to claim for the night, I tried to empty my mind of every little thought. I desperately needed peace.

Crowds of people surrounded either side of as I made my way to the entrance of the police department. Kira, the killer, was keeping me awake at night, and I knew needed to help end this.
The men at the front desk were looking down their nose as I stood in my trench coat and leggings.
"I need to speak to the chief. It's urgent."
"The chief," one of them, the taller one, drawled out, "Is far too busy. If you spoke with us, we could certainly relay your message."
"I don't have time for this!" My voice pitched frantically. "Frankly, I don't trust anyone other than him, so send him down to me, or let me go and see him!"
"Calm down miss, we cannot send you up." The shorter, stouter man said. "We will have to ask you to leave if you cause a commotion."
Anger began rising in me. "You don't understand. Thousands of lives will be saved if you just let me speak to him."
"Miss, I'm going to have to ask you to leave." The tall one stated, standing up.
"Enough." A cool, firm voice rasped out. "Let the young lady up. I have a free moment. Please, come join me."
Looking behind the desk, I could see an older man in a suit with graying hair and glasses offering me his stern face.
Swiftly, I walked to the man who invited me. I knew immediately that he was the chief.
Up the stairs and in a small office, I sat down.
Panic and excitement swarmed my stomach. He took a seat behind the desk, opening a laptop.
I looked down at my hands and breathed in a gulp of fresh air. A smile took over m lips as I made eye contact. "I'm Miss Devereaux, and I have important information on the Kira case."
He jerked a bit. "Elaborate."
"The killer, I believe it is a single person, someone in his or her schooling years. With when the deaths occur, it is almost positive that the person is a child. Then, I also believe that this person is imposing as a person bringing good and justice to the world. They truly believe their actions are right, and thus, will continue until stopped."
"I see," he stated slowly. "Is there anything else miss Devereaux?"
"Yes," I swallowed. "I want to join in on the search. I have been proven more than once before that I am capable to help with this. I need to help."
The Chief glanced at the computer screen. "Miss Devereaux, how old are you?" he questioned.
"I'll be taking college placement tests in the next couple of months. I'll turn 18 soon."
"I see," he looked down his nose at me. Why do people keep doing that! "Where are you from?"
"Europe. I was born in Greece."
"Devereaux," a computer animated voice shocked me. "Were you possibly educated while in Greece?"
"Um," this through me off. "No, maids taught me."
"I see."
Panic was racing in my blood. Who was on the other side of the screen?
"Tell me, what keeps you up at night?"
How did he...? "Dreams,"
A deafening silence filled the air. I could hear my heartbeat.
The crackling, earsplitting sound from the computer spoke again. "I believe that she will be helpful. Allow her to join us. Keep her contacted. Do you have a place that you are staying?"
"I stay in hotels, frequently changing to be honest."
"I see," the voice stated. "I will arrange for you to stay in one of the penthouse rooms near the station."
"Thank you!" This was shocking.
"Furthermore, I believe this is over. Miss Devereaux, welcome to the team. I am L."
