"Eighteen! Today you're a man, boy," John slurred in greeting, as he staggered in stinking of whiskey.
Relieved to finally see his father back, Dean carefully closed the door to where Sam was sleeping and helped John to the couch.
Dean thought about years of wiping Sam's nose, teaching him about girls, and trying to help with homework.
He avoided thinking of all the times they'd been left for weeks, with the money running out almost as quickly as the food.
"Yeah, every day since I was four, Dad," he smiled ruefully, not mentioning it had been his birthday yesterday.
