The Truth
.
A tiny Doctor/Donna fic, short and angsty. She was his best friend, and I think she would have been perfect for him. And the undertone, that she would be with him forever, supported that. Happy reading!
.
He'd stolen Donna from her wedding. Never mind that it hadn't been on purpose. Never mind that he hadn't even known who she was. Never mind that she'd immediately berated him as though he'd kidnapped her.
He had stolen her away, straight from her father's arm, from halfway up the aisle. Before she married that troll Lance, thank Rassilon. That had to mean something.
Didn't it?
.
"With this ring, I thee biodamp."
"For better or for worse?"
.
His hearts were so consumed with escaping the pain of losing Rose, he hadn't seen it then. Time Lords were known for their keen observations, but his overload of emotion had blinded him to her radiance.
.
"You're the man who keeps savin' my life, I ain't lettin' you outta my sight."
.
Pale skin, brown freckles, fiery red hair. For such an off-putting human, she had certainly wormed her way into his hearts fast enough. Why else had he asked her along so quickly?
.
"Whatever's been done to you, I'll reverse it. I'm not about to lose someone else."
.
She didn't want to come with him, she'd made that much perfectly clear, and he hadn't realized he missed her until Martha had left; he needed someone, and his thoughts lingered on her, no matter what other humans he considered, until...
.
"This friend of yours... Just before she left, did she punch you in face?"
.
He saw her there, across a room, unexpected, perfect, beautiful.
.
"Lance was right. We're just...tiny."
"No, but that's what you do! The human race! Make sense out of chaos!"
.
He grew used to her, to the way she made sense out of his chaos. He came to expect her cheek, her laugh, her scent, her heart, the way she saw through to the truth of things.
She kept him grounded when he was caught in the stars.
.
"I don't need anybody."
.
He realized the truth much too late; she crumpled, weeping, into him as he wiped her memories.
Donna was who he'd always needed.
And she was gone.
