Okay guys so this is the rewritten version of the first chapter of The 14th Court Guard Squad. I will hopefully be rewriting the rest of the chapters as well then I will get back to writing the story. I will try to get the rewrites out as quickly as possible, hope you enjoy~
My name is Sango Li Abarai. I am the captain of Squadron 14, a squadron that consists of only the strongest soul reapers within the soul society. I am the older sister of Renji Abarai. We have two older siblings known as Rina and Roku. The four of us were all born and raised in 78th district Rukon. Our story starts a year after the death of our father, the former lieutenant of Squadron 14 Satoshi Abarai, in a field not far from our home.
A young girl with waist length red hair watched from the shadows as two men and a boy about her age moved through the trees silently.
It was him. He was the man that had killed her father a year earlier. She remembered seeing him standing over her fathers dead body with that same sinister smirk on his face.
"Rather than hiding why don't you come out, Sango Abarai?" her eyes went wide when the man spoke to her. She stood then grabbed her father's zanpakto and fled, flash stepping away from them as fast as she could.
They all reacted fast and soon she found herself stuck between the three males. She ignored the kid and the blind one and focused her gaze on the leader of the three, the man with brown hair and black rimmed glasses.
"What do you want!?" she snarled as she held onto sokoryu, her father's zanpakto, tightly.
"I simply wish to talk to you. You have been following us for some time so I would like to know why," he stated in a voice that would have made her respect him had he not killed her father.
"That's none of your damn business you murderer!" she spat, glaring at the man who looked to be in his mid twenties.
She heard movement behind her and drew her fathers zanpakto and turned, the zanpakto in her hands clashing with the zanpakto of the silver haired kid.
He began to push her back and she cursed under her breath then spun and kicked him, getting him in the gut before jumping up into one of the trees and fleeing as fast as she could, jumping from tree to tree, hoping and praying that they wouldn't catch her.
She stopped when she hit the edge of the tree line and looked at the gate as it opened for the three returning soul reapers.
She only had two options remaining. Turn around and get killed by the soul reapers or flee into the seireitei.
She chose the option that was less likely to lead to her own unfortunate demise and flash stepped from the tree into the seireitei, running away from the squad barracks and sokyoku hill.
She stopped after a while and looked around. She was an area that had a lot of large, expensive looking buildings in it. She jumped over the fence of one of the buildings then looked around the large beautiful yard. It had a small stream running through the center of the yard, a bridge built over the stream. The grass was a beautiful shade of green and there were flowers growing along the sides of the building.
She was sure there would be plenty of places for her to hide here. She entered the house silently, making sure to hide her spiritual pressure as she moved through the silent, dark house.
It didn't take her long to find the kitchen and she grabbed a few pieces of fruit from a basket on the counter before sneaking back out into the yard.
She glanced up at the full moon and sighed lightly. What would she do now? She was stuck in the seireitei now and Renji was all alone in that shack in 78th district Rukon.
She shook her head. She had to focus on getting out of here alive first. She was no use to her little brother if she was dead.
She sat down on the rail of the bridge then ate the fruit she had stolen. She jumped down from the bridge onto the grass and looked around. She soon found a hollowed out tree trunk and climbed inside, resting her zanpakto against the inside of the tree trunk as she got comfortable.
She stared at the fence of the large mansion and dosed off as the sun began to rise over Sokyoku hill.
It was dark outside when she woke up. She pulled herself from the tree trunk and tucked sokoryu into her belt before sneaking into the house again the same way she had the day before. She took a few more pieces of fruit then curled up inside the tree trunk again, hugging her father's zanpakto.
"Father… What would you have done in this situation?" she asked as she looked up at the moon.
She spent a week at that house, sneaking in to get food and sleeping in the same hollowed out tree trunk. During the day she heard a lot of talking and every now and then she would see a kid who looked a little older than her practicing his zanjutsu.
She stood then snuck into the house silently like she always did. She moved with ease through the dark house and towards the kitchen. When she got there she grabbed a few pieces of fruit and turned to leave, gasping when she bumped into someone. She backed away and looked for an escape route.
The light was turned on and she flinched a little from the sudden bright light. She looked at the person she had bumped into then blinked in surprise when she saw the boy from the yard.
He looked about three years older than me and had black hair that was tied back into a pony tail and curious slate eyes.
"What are you doing in my house?" he asked and his eyes scanned over me, lastly taking in the fruit in my hands.
"I am so sorry that I broke in! Just please don't tell anyone about this!" she exclaimed, hoping that the boy wouldn't make her leave.
"Well I noticed you sleeping in the tree a few times so I guess that means you have nowhere to go," he stated earning a nod from the red head. "Well then why don't you come with me and let me show you around the house, I can show you my room and a bunch of other cool things around the house!" he exclaimed and she blinked in surprise.
"I don't know…" she trailed off.
"If you come with me then I'll get you new clothing, let you have a bath and even let you stay here. I'll make up some excuse about you being from the shihouin clan or something!" She nodded again.
"Alright."
"Good, then let's start by sending a message to Yoruichi so she can help us out."
"Um… Shouldn't we start by introducing ourselves?" she asked and the boy blinked in surprise.
"Oh yeah, I guess we should. Well I'm Byakuya Kuchiki." Her eyes went wide as she looked at him.
"Y-You're a Kuchiki!? I had no idea that I was hiding in the backyard of the Kuchiki Mansion! Please forgive me for trespassing!" the boy shrugged.
"No need to apologize, I don't really mind." The girl smiled gently.
"Well my name is Sango Li Abarai, it's nice to meet you Byakuya," she stated and the boy smiled as well.
"Okay now that we have introduced ourselves let's go find you some new clothes then contact Yoruichi," she nodded and followed Byakuya to his room and he slid open to door, gesturing her in. She entered the room and sat down on the bed.
Byakuya left the room for a few minutes and when he returned he had a red outfit similar to his in his hands. He handed it to the girl.
"You get changed, I will go and contact Yoruichi," she nodded as Byakuya walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.
She stripped out of her tattered red kimono and slid on the long sleeved red and white shirt first before sliding on the red hakama's.
She flopped onto the bed and looked up at the ceiling. She had to find a way to get back to Renji… She couldn't just abandon him there. With their big sister Rina in squad twelve and their brother Roku in Soul Reaper Academy that left only the two of them. Now that Sango was gone the boy was all alone in Rukon.
After a few minutes Byakuya returned and sat down on the bed beside her.
"I sent the message," he stated and the girl nodded, shivering slightly from the cold air creeping in from the open shoji screen door that lead from Byakuya's room to the hall.
She sneezed and Byakuya leaned over placing a hand gently against her forehead.
"I think you might also have a cold," he stated as his hand dropped back to his side. "Stay here, I'll go get you some tea," he stated and headed to the kitchen.
Sango lay on the bed, still staring up at the ceiling, sleep slowly taking hold of her senses. It didn't take long for her to give up on trying to stay awake and she dozed off before Byakuya returned.
The black haired boy returned a few minutes later with tea in his hands. He noticed the sleeping girl and smiled a little. He carefully put the tea down on his desk, careful not to sleep the red head.
He didn't mind her sleeping on his bed. She seemed so sad and lonely… it reminded him of his self.
He sat down beside her and watched as she slept peacefully. The moment he had seen her asleep in that tree trunk he had know she was from Rukon. All the members of the Kuchiki Clan with the exception of his father had told him not to associate with people from Rukon. They all said that people from Rukon were no good thieves but now he could see that they were wrong. Just because this girl was from Rukon didn't mean that she was different than them.
Just because she was from Rukon it didn't mean that she was some sort of monster that needed to be killed. She was an innocent kid who was trying to find her place in this messed up world just like he was.
His thoughts were disturbed when a hell butterfly fluttered in through the still partially open door of his bedroom and landed on his finger. Yoruichi said that she would help and that she would send a message to his dad in the morning talking about why Sango was going to stay with the Kuchiki's.
He made a mental note to thank Yoruichi then closed the door and tucked Sango in before laying on the floor beside the bed and dozing off.
*THE NEXT DAY*
Sango woke up around 7am and Byakuya soon woke up as well. They stayed in Byakuya's room until about noon and when they were sure Byakuya's parent's would have gotten the message they headed out of the bedroom to the kitchen where two men stood together talking.
One of them was older, he had long white hair that hung to his shoulders and wore a silk scarf around his neck along with a white haori. The other was the stunning older image of Byakuya. He had long black hair that was about the same length as the other man's and wore two kenseikan on the left side of his head. On his arm was a lieutenant badge with the number six and a camellia on it. Both men had the same slate eyes that Byakuya did.
"Oh there you are Byakuya," the younger of the two men stated as the two kids walked in.
"So you must be Sango, Yoruichi neice," the older man stated and the girl nodded, feeling a little nervous around such high class people.
"I am Sojun Kuchiki, Byakuya's father and this is Ginrei Kuchiki, the captain of Squadron Six and my father," the younger man stated with a gentle smile and Sango smiled as well.
"It is a pleasure to meet you both," she stated as she bowed her head.
"So what are you two going to do today?" Ginrei inquired.
"I intend to show Sango around then we will probably just relax for the rest of the day," Byakuya stated and both men nodded.
"Alright, well we have to get going now, you two have fun and try not to cause any trouble Byakuya," Sojun teased earning a scoff from the teen.
"Okay, bye dad. I'll see you when you get home," he stated and Sojun smiled, waving as him and Ginrei left together.
Byakuya showed Sango around and when the tour was done they both went outside and flopped onto the grass together.
"You're father is very kind," she stated and Byakuya nodded.
"Yeah, he has always been a very kind and gentle person. He is someone who is not suitable for the life of a soul reaper. I don't hold it against him though. I grew up around him and my grandfather because my mother died when I was still very young."
"I see, that must have been tough. My father was murdered in front of me and my little brother Renji one year ago."
"Is that why you are here?" Byakuya asked "to get revenge?"
"Not exactly, you see I was fleeing from the guy who killed my father and the only place I really had left to go was into the Seireitei."
"Well why didn't you just hide until they left?" he inquired.
"Because they would have sensed my spiritual pressure and come to dispose of me. It was likely too because one of them was a lieutenant," she stated as she looked up at the blue sky.
"Do you remember what squad he was from or what he looked like?" she nodded.
"I remember that he had short brown floppy hair and thick black rimmed glasses. I can't remember what squad he was from but I do kinda remember what the flower on his lieutenant badge looked like." Byakuya grabbed a stick then moved over towards a little patch of dirt and began to draw all of the squad flowers in the dirt. When he was done he gestured the girl over.
"Which one?" he asked and she looked at all of them then pointed to the Lily of the valley.
"That one, the flower for squad five," she stated and the boy nodded.
"Alright then when dad gets home we can ask him about the lieutenant of squadron five."
"Do you know anything about Squad Five Byakuya?" she asked and he thought for a moment.
"Not much. All I really know is that squad five is run by Captain Shinji Hirako and Lieutenant Sosuke Aizen. I don't know much about Squad Five besides that. Just basic stuff about the squad in general," he replied and she sighed.
Sosuke Aizen.
She now knew the name of the man that had killed her father. The name of the man who had torn her family apart. The name of the man who was her mortal enemy.
