Demelza was the runt of the litter and overlooked amongst the rowdy, ill-tempered boys in her household. That is until her father had a bad day and decided to turn to the bottle for comfort, resulting in him beating the living daylights out of her. Her brothers never intervened, assuming this was the natural order of things. Maybe they blamed her for their mother`s death like he did? Whenever bad luck befell the family it was always her fault. It didn't help that her eyes were as bright as spring grass and her hair was a mess of flaming red curls like their mother`s.

Demelza often hid her unruly locks under a simple cap and wore her brothers`castoffs. She had to be tough and fight for her share of meager meals when living with a bunch of boys. The girl wasn't above fist fights or tackling if it helped her earn a place at the table. She was only happy when she wandered through the town or the countryside with her loyal dog. She was free to sing out loud without causing complaints.

Her life seemed bleak until Ross Poldark came along. She never expected a man from the upper class to help someone like her. She'd always thought her kind were invisible to them and as easy to discard as a pebble in one`s shoe. He lost everything and she had nothing to lose. Maybe that`s why fate brought them together? The two halves would become whole and their life`s journey would be twice as rewarding because of this. An estate in ruin would become their little piece of heaven surrounded by wildflowers and glistening seas.

The most unexpected part of all was when she became Mrs. Demelza Poldark. It was easy to fall in love with the only person who had shown her kindness. What started off as gratitude soon blossomed into love. Yet doubt burdened her heart even as her love for him grew with each passing day. What was she to him?

Greater challenges still lie ahead and she would need to rise to the prospect of becoming a lady was beyond daunting. A rush of anxiety overtook her, causing knots to form in her stomach. Demelza feared she'd be a moth amongst butterflies in the presence of the elegant, educated ladies. Yet the lowly moth spread her wings that night and shone brightly in a dazzling array of colors. The young woman became the person she never dreamed she could be. She finally discovered that the person she loved most in the world also loved her too. Her mind and heart was put at ease by knowing that the life growing within her would be cherished as well. Love flowered amidst the ruins and restored her world by filling it with hope for the future.
