Abby spun around in anticipation when she heard the elevator ding. "Gibbs? How'd it go?" Gibbs walked over to her and took a deep breath. "Abs," he said, his face crumpling.
"What?" Abby was scared, despite the fact that he was taller than her, she was not as intimidated by him as she usually was.
"Ari shot Kate." This blunt statement tore Abby open. "She's dead."
"No," whispered Abby. She didn't dare to believe it. But Gibbs wouldn't lie, not about this. "No! You LIED to me, Gibbs! You promised me you would bring them home. You lied to me!" Her sobs and hysteria escalated. "No, no, no."
"Abs," Gibbs grabbed her by the shoulders, dodging her hits of rage as she threw then at him. "There was nothing we could do. She's gone, I'm so sorry." He pulled her into a fierce hug and held tight, tears running down his own cheeks.
"You lied to me. She was my best friend and now she's gone, she, she's..." Abby sobbed into Gibbs' shirt. Everything was over, she couldn't live through this, she wanted nothing more at this moment than to join Kate so they could be together again. "You took her away, she was everything to me." She knew that her next words weren't true, Gibbs would have tried everything. "I hate you. I loved her, and now she's gone."
Another silent tear slid down Gibbs' cheek. "I loved her too, Abby. You can hate me all you want, but it's not going to bring her back. Nothing ever will." With that, Gibbs left the Goth in peace in her lab to cry her heart out, and that's exactly what she did. Kate wasn't coming back, and Abby wasn't going anywhere. "Goodbye." She whispered to the empty wall. "I'll never forget you."
