Chapter One:
Bones didn't quite know what to do. Jim had been comatose for more than a week. Starfleet had put the Enterprise on shore leave for an unspecified amount of time as well as ordering the ship back to Earth. Needless to say, the Admiralty was hoping that the good CMO would figure out what was wrong with the Golden Boy of Starfleet before the ship docked. Under normal circumstances, the First Captain would assume command of the vessel, but with Spock on his own vacation leave for personal business at the Vulcan Colony, the crew all but had their hands tied. Sulu and Scotty were taking care of the conn at intervals but it was nothing like having the Captain and First Officer. Their presence was notably felt and missed.
Uhura had sent a couple transmissions herself to the new Vulcan colony and yet heard no news from Spock. After the situation was first said to the crew (who, along with Starfleet, were ordered to keep his condition under wraps), Uhura sent a quick message to the colony. The receiver said that they would transfer the message along. After a third attempt, Uhura was downright pissed. Spock had left her a couple months into their relationship, yet no hard feelings were felt on her part when he eventually started courting the Captain.
Over time, she and the Captain had bonded together. Slowly, after spending countless hours with him on the bridge and around the ship, she began to understand the complexities of James T. Kirk. He was hardly the man she had originally portrayed him to be. The Nero incident had obviously changed him too, none the less. But the mask that he wore to the rest of the world was now something she could see through.
She was the one, along with Bones, to give him the extra push he needed to accepting Spock's advances. All of his arguments were dismantled by the two of them, leaving him without an excuse as to why he couldn't give the relationship a try. A goodness was it a blessing! The two of them had been together for over a year already. Looking at the two of them made Uhura long for the type of passion the two of them shared.
Needless to say that when Spock didn't respond to her fifth attempt, she was livid with the man and his lack of response. Vulcan's cannot lie, so Spock had to receive the message. Granted, the colony was still new, but that didn't account for five attempts to be misplaced. If Vulcan's said something, they meant it.
So she had assumed a vigil next to her Captain, to her friend, who had saved her life more times than she could count with nary a thought of his own wellbeing. Bones was slumbering in his office, door open incase of any emergency.
Beeping drew Uhura's mind from her thoughts and musings. Quickly, she put down the PADD she had been reading, leaning forward to look at him closely. "Jim?" Hope stirred in her chest. Eyes fluttered open, revealing dazed blue orbs.
A heavy sigh of relief escaped her lips. "Oh thank God!" she exhaled, pushing a button that had McCoy on his feet in no time, running for his best friend and patient.
He whipped out a tricorder with record speed, taking note of the readings. A frown crossed his face, hiding the relief that was once present. The readings were the same, no indication for the reason behind his sudden comatose experience.
Jim's eyes looked lost and hazy, as if he was under twilight. "Spockā¦" he rasped out through parched lips.
