SURGE

By: Lost-Remembrance (Red Tail)

Chapter One:

Edward's eyes were wide with pain as the red water charged through his body, igniting alchemic reactions. Amidst the roar in his ears, the screams trapped in his closed throat, he heard the distant sound of soldiers and the sins trying to do God knows what. His brother's terrified, worried voice cut through the haze clouding his mind.

"Brother!" Al walked forward, as if pulled towards his brother by an unseen force. Some of the soldier's around him tried to pull him back away from the unstable elements, but the harsh wind halted their attempts.

As soon as Al's metal body stepped onto the red water, Edward's eyes flashed with a spark of clarity. An array flashed through his mind, aided by the power coursing through his veins. Al was still trudging forward towards his older brother. His arms, sporadically twitching and spawning alchemic reactions, slammed together, his hands clapping.

A bright light flashed in the underground room, blinding the occupants. A scream cut through the air, fear rushed through Lieutenant Ross's veins as she tried determining if it was Edward or Alphonse or even both of them.

Eventually, the light faded away leaving only an alchemic charge in the air and an odd smell. Hughes had run into the room during the spectacular light show. Now, he gasped in surprise at the two bodies lying in the center of the room. Few drops of the red water that once pooled on the floor remained.

One of the forms moved, groaning at the action. A blonde haired youth leaned up, hand gripping his head as if he was afflicted by a headache. Then, he gasped as he opened his cornflower blue eyes and stared at his hand in wonder and absolute awe.

Hughes finally found his voice after a few speechless minutes. "Alphonse?" he questioned, uncertainty in his voice, as if he wasn't sure who he was addressing. It simply wasn't possible though. Edward Elric always somehow did manage to achieve the impossible however.

"How…" Alphonse himself was clearly at a loss and a befuddled as the Colonel. Then, his blue eyes widened in comprehension as he shouted, "Brother!"

Edward still hadn't moved from where he had collapsed after the alchemic transformation ended. Both Hughes and Al rushed for the smaller alchemist. Though he was breathing, he remained unaware, even as his brother worriedly huddled beside him. "Get a medic out here!" Hughes yelled as he scooped Edward up into his arms. Ross rushed forward as well, hefting Alphonse's weak body up with support from her own. The building seemed to shake and rumble as soldiers all around them rushed around and out of the unstable building.

"Alphonse is perfectly fine with no lingering effects from the transformation. Lt. Armstrong discovered the armor that Alphonse's soul was attached to, which was logged as evidence. The soldiers just assumed that his alchemy was reacting as well to the red water and that he finally decided to come out of his armor." Lt. Hawkeye said to Colonel Mustang.

"Well, as unexpected as it was, he still seems to be bigger than Edward." The dark haired man mused. He folded his hands in front of him, face turning from melancholy to serious as he leaned forward to the Lt. "Any news from Edward?"

Hawkeye's face fell ever so slightly, speaking volumes to her superior on the unchanged status of Edward Elric. "No, sir." She quietly responded. Her throat seemed to constrict a bit before she regained her control. She saluted and left the office, heading to her own desk to complete mindless paperwork and regain her composure.
