That Side of Paradise

It had been several hours since Leila Kalomi had heard from Mr. Spock; she was beginning to think that something may have happened to him. Mr. Sulu, sensing her worry, had been kind enough to lend her his communicator so that she might contact him.

She flipped it open cautiously and cooed, "Spock? Mr. Spock?"

There was no answer. She patiently waited for the Vulcan to acknowledge her call.

Somewhere in the lush landscape of Omicron Ceti III, Mr. Spock was lying upon the ground with his head in his Captain's lap, and Jim Kirk was reclining luxuriously under a particularly tall and leafy tree. Spock's communicator beeped loudly, indicating that he was trying to be reached, but the two of them blatantly ignored it.

"That one looks like a dragon; see the tail?" said Mr. Spock as he gazed at the clouds passing by.

Jim played idly with the Vulcan's hair, "I've seen a dragon. We both did, remember?" He smiled, reminiscing.

Spock, too, recalled the event. He smiled and nodded, "On Berengarias 7. But I've never stopped to look at clouds," He stood up, daring to break contact with Jim, "Or rainbows. You know, I could tell you exactly why one appears in the sky," Kirk laughed; he knew that very well.

Spock continued, "But considering its beauty has always been out of the question."

He looked back at his Captain to find that he was grinning, grateful for one thing: "Not here." And those two words seemed to explain the entirety of their existence. Not here.

Spock reached for Jim's hands and pulled him to his feet. Their lips met in a soft, full kiss as the communicator continued to beep impatiently on the ground beside them.

Back at the settlement, Leila was becoming increasingly perturbed: why wasn't Spock answering?

Finally, the communicator proved to be too obnoxious to ignore any longer. Kirk, still holding onto Spock, reached for the device, flipped it open and held it for his Vulcan.

"Spock!" said the voice of Leila.

Spock continued to embrace Jim, kissing his forehead tenderly. "Yes," he said in an impatient tone, "what did you want?"

Leila was momentarily puzzled. "Spock, is that you?"

Getting a little annoyed by the interruption, Spock replied, "Yes, Ms. Kalomi, what did you want?" He pulled Jim a little closer and nuzzled his golden hair; Kirk looked rather pleased with himself as he smiled and drank in the moment.

A touch of concern entered into the woman's voice. "Mr. Spock, where are you?"

Spock laughed, almost too completely lost in his Captain to care what Leila was saying. "I don't believe I want to tell you." He hugged Jim tighter and placed more kisses on his brow.

At this point, Leila could guess what was going on at the other end of the communicator, and she was getting downright upset. She said, in a pained voice, "Mr. Spock, I don't know what you're doing, but please— come back to the settlement. Please!"

Her pleas had no effect on Spock; "No, I don't think so." He petted Jim's soft hair and buried his face in it.

The young woman was on the verge of tears when she spoke again, "You don't think so?! Please, Mr. Spock! You must come back!"

He cries went unnoticed as Kirk and Spock embraced and pressed their lips together once more. Jim lowered his hand that still held the communicator and Spock met it. Their fingers danced together as they gently closed the small device and let it drop to the ground.

Leila Kalomi was torn between rage and tears. When she realized that no one was listening to her on the other end, she snapped the communicator shut.

Damn spores.
